From the groovy opening beats of the Miracles' "Love Machine"
through the following seven tracks, the soundtrack to The
Broken Hearts Club is a house party waiting to happen. The
film is a dramatic comedy about friendship among a group of
lonely, 20-something gay men struggling with relationships
and tragedy under the sunny skies of West Hollywood. However,
aside from Mary Beth Maziarz' lovely (though lackluster)
covers of two tunes made famous by the Carpenters ("Close to
You" and "We've Only Just Begun"), the drum machine-heavy
music here mostly reflects the constant party lifestyle
embraced by some of the film's characters. The standout is
Junior Vasquez's sprawling, techno-flavored 12-minute mix of
Shannon's '80s dance-floor staple "Let the Music Play." Other
performers include wannabe diva Kim English ("Time for Love"
and "Learn 2 Love"), producer Giorgio Moroder and DJ Danny
Tenaglia (who team up on "From Here to Eternity"), Barry
Harris ("Beg for It"), and Kym Mazelle (whose cover of the
disco-pop favorite "Young Hearts Run Free" is the album's
only dance track that I find truly danceable). While little
is new or fresh on this album, it will provide an excellent
backdrop for your next house party -- or aerobics class.
