Shalamar was the creation of Dick Griffey, the
booking agent for the television R&B program
Soul Train, and British R&B producer Simon
Soussan. The group's first single, the 1977
Motown medley "Uptown Festival," featured a
bevy of faceless studio musicians; once it
became a hit, Griffey decided to form a
performing group under the name Shalamar.
Through Soul Train, Griffey found Jody Watley,
Jeffrey Daniels, and Gerald Brown, the three
vocalists that became Shalamar; Brown was
quickly replaced by Howard Hewitt in 1978.
This hard-to-find 12-inch vinyl, not even
represented on discogs, is a Solar/MCA release
compiled in 1985 featuring "My Girl Loves Me"
produced by Hawk & Howard Hewett taken off
Shalamar's 1984 album "Heartbreak". We also
have a full 12" version of the group's
breakthrough compilation anthem "Uptown
Festival" (see below). But the real treat of
this release is the b-side's "A Mix To
Remember" featuring an exclusive blend of
stellar Shalamar hits made by Alan Coulthard
(of Disco Mix Club Ltd.).
+ Uptown Festival (Full 12" Version):
a) "Going To A Go-Go"
b) "I Can't Help Myself"
c) "Uptight (Everything's Alright)"
d) "Stop! In The Name Of Love"
e) "It's The Same Old Song"
f) "Tears Of A Clown"
g) "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart"
h) "This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)"
i) "Baby Love"
j) "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'"
+ A Mix To Remember (Special Mix by Alan
Coulthard for Disco Mix Club Ltd.):
a) "A Night To Remember"
b) "There It Is"
c) "Over And Over"
d) "A Night To Remember"
e) "I Can Make You Feel Good"
f) "I Owe You"
g) "A Night To Remember"
