Another HOT Release from WHOA!
Rhythm and blues, the primary form of black music of the
Æ50s and Æ60s, experienced a wave of growing pains during
the Æ70s. Between the titanic wallop of Motown and Stax,
black artists were growing in stature, and seeking a more
relevant identity on par with the racial and social climate
of the day. The result was a soulful outpouring of raw
emotion that borrowed heavily from gospel, blues, and even
jazz. The final blend wavered between untainted elegance and
laconic raucousness, often laced with political overtones.
