This is a truly magical soundtrack that
stirrs the spirit. Based in a ballad opera
style it bears the combined talents of some
very acomplished artists. My favourite
tracks are FLINDERS THEME, LITTLE BONES, ONE
NIGHT THE MOON and the amazing Ruby Hunter
singing OH BREATHE ON ME to an ancient Irish
melody.
The magical music is influenced by Irish
roots and empty Australian landscapes. There
are almost a dozen songs that together trace
the story of a child lost, following the
moon because it has "called all the
dreamers", and she is one. A counter story
breaks out of the strong THIS LAND IS MINE
where two men have widely differing
relationships with the land. It is ironic
and moving. The charm of Paul Kelly, Kaarin
Fairfax and their daughter Memphis singing
the title track together overflows. Mairead
and Deirdre Hannan arouse like hymnal Sylphs
on a hauntingly evocative and chilling
track, MOON CHILD.
Love the ballads by Kev Carmody. Some movie
soundtracks are developed in an organic sort
of way, such as this one, and it creates a
density of spirit in the process. It is so
tight and well developed musically you would
be forgiven for thinking some of the music
is standard old time celtic fare, yet it's
far more complex than that. There's a unique
blending of Lute, Bodhran, Violin, Uilleann
Pipes, Dijeridu, Guitar, Double Bass and
Mandolin along with the range of voices. In
the truest style of balladry the songs each
tell a story from a point of view. A tragic,
operatic story. Going through the lyrics
inside the cover as well as hearing them it
is easy to fix on the central theme and deep
sadness of the tale, but it is a hauntingly
beautiful sadness that is easily connected
with. I find it inspirational and very
satisfying to listen to again and again. A
unique and charming addition to any music
lovers library.
