The first of two Chico Freeman recordings for the
soon-defunct Black-Hawk label finds the leader
switching between tenor, alto, sopranino, soprano,
bass clarinet, bass flute and C flute. John Purcell
"only" limits himself to five reeds (alto, baritone,
oboe, alto flute and piccolo), and the horns are
joined by either Kenny Kirkland or Mark Thompson on
piano, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Elvin Jones.
The many combinations of reeds highlight this set,
which has originals by Freeman, Mark Thompson ("Monk
2000"), John Stubblefield, Alex North and Cecil McBee
("Blues on the Bottom"), in addition to the standard
"Softly As In a Morning Sunrise." The style ranges
from straight-ahead to more exploratory sounds, and
this colorful album is worth searching for. ~ Scott

gF is about bringing music we like and want others in the scene
to check out. Not more not less. We try to keep our choices of music
off the mainstream path. But as far as genres go you can expect
anything. Our rippers are allowed freedom to share their music
collection. (dont worry you wont be seeing the newest mtv crap
made for TV flavor of the month bands).
Our Hearts go out to the mp3 scene
and we want to be a part of it.. We thrive on each other,
As well we thrive on the people who get our releases,
its all one big group all in all. If you like a band from
downloading a gF rip please try to go out and support
them and buy some merch directly from the bands. As some of our
ripper are in bands or promote shows themselves, they know what it's
like to get the extra help.
. .. thanks..
