██ Paul Pigat's many fans are probably more familiar with him as ██
██ the front man of the rockin' Cousin Harley band. You might think ██
██ that acoustic music is a new diversion for the already ██
██ multi-talented Vancouver musician. Not so. But not everyone is ██
██ familiar with this side of Paul - that of emotive ██
██ singer-songwriter. Boxcar Campfire will soon change that ██
██ situation. Paul Pigat's latest CD is a collection of songs about ██
██ love, heartbreak, and redemption; mostly self-penned tunes along ██
██ with a handful of creatively arranged covers. Although laced ██
██ with tasteful musicianship, this recording is a departure in the ██
██ sense that the songs rather than the playing are the main ██
██ feature. ██

██ Oh man, this one is soooo very cool as Paul Pigat embodies an ██
██ old-timey vibe like nobody's business! The etymology of Boxcar ██
██ Campfire is a hobo's night blaze fired up to warm body and soul ██
██ 'midst a tradition of solitarily gypsy ways, freedom with ██
██ hazards and want but a woolly experience around which many great ██
██ songs have been written. In that, Pigat imbues his work with ██
██ such bounce and vigor deriving from a swinging blues base that ██
██ one is immediately reminded of Van Dyke Parks, Leon Redbone, the ██
██ Cheap Suit Serenaders, old black blues, and country cowboy heel ██
██ kicking. Not only that but the guy possesses a knack for lyrics ██
██ that slots his original work right in there with the classics, a ██
██ few of which, old and new, he covers here, the rest of the mode ██
██ ringing solidly in absentia. Plays a damn good guitar, too, full ██
██ of imagery and emotionùcatch Nowhere Town for an eerily ██
██ affecting example. ██

██ In his rocking' hillbilly persona, Pigat's the lead man for ██
██ Cousin Harley (here), where he swings mean and hard before ██
██ adopting a suave nightclub face for the Paul Pigat Trio, playing ██
██ a righteous Les Paul / Charlie Byrd / Kenny Burrell guitar in ██
██ jazz-smooth measures, but this solo stuff in Boxcar is so far ██
██ removed from all of that, that it's almost spooky. The guy's a ██
██ split personality case, all three manifestations 100% convicted. ██
██ Even his voice chameleons itself to scale the fence in ██
██ authenticity as railroad cops come sprinting down the rails ██
██ brandishing billy clubs to hustle the bums, refugees, and bo's ██
██ off to someone else's jurisdiction. Then Troubled Mind lovingly ██
██ betrays sympathies to fellow Canadian Gordon Lightfoot. ██
██ ██
██ Johnny's Poorly is a Hesitation Blues riff almost sounding like ██
██ an outtake from Wizard of Oz, perhaps from a gaggle of ██
██ unemployed Topeka Line munchkins lamenting a fellow oustee's bad ██
██ luck. Why Wizard of Oz? Well, because there's the most unusual ██
██ sense of subterranean merriment in the rendition despite the ██
██ plaint of its mood, an irrepressible something in Pigat's work ██
██ that refuses to be nailed down, flitting from cut to cut with ██
██ engaging vivacity, all of it smoky with the husky flavors of a ██
██ cat who lives for his work. In fact, this release is so ██
██ hellaciously good that were I to resurrect my ██
██ last-year-abandoned participation in the Top 20 O' Da Year FAME ██
██ List, Boxcar Campfire would be one of the first inductees. ██

██ Acoustic Music ██

██ Like any broad musical genre be it metal, punk, rock, country, ██
██ blues, etc. there are gray lines about where certain bands or ██
██ specific albums fall in sub-genre wise. Take country for ██
██ example: country to me is honest and simple. Not simple as in it ██
██ canÆt get complicated musically because it can, but simple as ██
██ far as emotions go. To me country is all about stories, and ██
██ being open with your feelings. Your woman left and broke your ██
██ heart, the flood is drowning all the cotton and is rising up to ██
██ the cabin, the train is moving along blowing its lonesome ██
██ whistle. Open and honest. ██
██ ██
██ Going acoustic helps with this. Over production of music makes ██
██ it too shiny, too perfect and hey, no oneÆs perfect, right? ██
██ Right. So why try to take something that should show a topic ██
██ with warts and all and make it glitzy? If someone is bigger than ██
██ life in their music and stage show than they arenÆt exactly ██
██ being honest. After all, theyÆre bigger than LIFE. Over the top. ██
██ Exaggerating. ██
██ ██
██ Also, to me, country is intimate. A country song should not feel ██
██ out of place around a campfire or played on your porch or in ██
██ your kitchen or even noodling around on the couch. You shouldnÆt ██
██ need a billion pedals and a custom guitar to channel honesty ██
██ with a bit of twang. ██
██ ██
██ Paul Pigat sent me his newest album Boxcar Campfire to review ██
██ and I think itÆs the epitome of country or what country should ██
██ be. He calls it his acoustic album though there are some ██
██ electric guitars here and there, and listening to it I didnÆt ██
██ know what to expect. I mean, when someone describes something as ██
██ acoustic it could be anything, right? The Eagles had an acoustic ██
██ album, as did Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and even Metallica. You ██
██ have bands like the Lost Fingers too. Acoustic merely means ██
██ unplugged so it was pretty exciting listening to it and since ██
██ youÆre reading this, I certainly hope you donÆt mind me spoiling ██
██ it a bit and labeling it ôcountry.ö ██
██ ██
██ Ah, but calling it country seems like such a cop out. ItÆs more ██
██ than that, really. There are some SERIOUS chops displayed ██
██ throughout the album and the songwriting is top notch, and it ██
██ has quite a bit of bluegrass to the feel of it, but it never ██
██ strays too far from the things that happen to line up exactly ██
██ with what I call country. Open and honest. ██
██ ██
██ The album being mostly acoustic really helps with this. So does ██
██ the production value. Let me explain this a bit: you can tell ██
██ PaulÆs playing his heart out but the recording itself doesnÆt ██
██ seem cheap or raw. ThereÆs no buzzing in the backgrounds or ██
██ extra noise. ItÆs just the instruments and you can hear every ██
██ detail about it, even through stock Toyota Carolla speakers, and ██
██ thatÆs what I like to hear. Nothing more open and honest than ██
██ having every detail of your playing recorded perfectly and ██
██ pumped through your speakers for the world to hear. ██
██ ██
██ And believe me, the world should hear this album. ItÆs awesome. ██
██ The songs span all sorts of topics but most of them are a little ██
██ down. ItÆs not depressing, but thereÆs not a lot of happiness ██
██ either. I really like it. If you turn on the radio the people ██
██ singing are all extremes. TheyÆre super happy, super in love, ██
██ super angry, super miserable, etc. etc. While life certainly has ██
██ these moments, most of your life is probably in an in-between ██
██ mode where nothingÆs too bad but itÆs not too great either. ██
██ ██
██ ItÆs pretty tough for me to review this album just because itÆs ██
██ so tough to describe. Maybe thatÆs why Paul called it an ██
██ acoustic album. If I said it was country, comparisons to Brad ██
██ Paisley, Blake Shelton, or Brooks & Dunn might jump to mind and ██
██ that is NOT what this album sounds like. What I said about it ██
██ not being that happy of an album might make you think itÆs a ██
██ downer and THAT is not true either. Intimate might make you ██
██ think slow and so on and so on and everything I could throw out ██
██ there to describe it would probably make you think of something ██
██ this album is not. ██
██ ██
██ So to be simple, the album is complex. Emotionally, I mean. ItÆs ██
██ the kind of album you listen to the first time and you really ██
██ want to hear it again because you just have to go through them ██
██ more and more to fully get the feeling, really listen to the ██
██ words, really try to take it in. This is not a listen to once ██
██ and itÆs immediately digested. This is quality music that you ██
██ just have to go back to. ██
██ ██
██ And I have to say, having watched PaulÆs instructional DVD and ██
██ hearing him soft-spoken and humble, the vocals on this are ██
██ pretty shocking. HeÆs got some serious soul to him and the ██
██ vocals display that perfectly. ██

██ Everything, the everything-displayed playing, the soulful ██
██ vocals, the great lyrics, the amazing production value, it all ██
██ comes together andà well, it ENVELOPS you. ThatÆs the best word ██
██ to describe it. ItÆs really a total package and honestly, IÆve ██
██ never heard anything like it. Paul should send this to Nashville ██
██ to show them how itÆs done. ██
