Amid all the fanfare surrounding Team Shadetek's rumoured addition to
Warp's mighty roster, New York's finest crew set aside some time to
deliver the long awaited new release on their own Shadetek imprint.
Bringing to the world two new artists û Danny L and Logreybeam, Matt and
Zak Shadetek wreck some deep sh*t with this obliterating, complex and
downright devastating assembly of intricate electronix at their very
best. Danny L gets side A, kicking in with the gargantuan mass of beats
that is "Last Night", finding itself a home somewhere between the
mathematical extrusions of the mighty Autechre and the psychopathic
discordance of Squarepusher, this is digital sound supreme, getting into
a sparkling, twisted groove of its own just in time for the abrupt
ending. Killer. "Now" is more contemplative, a formed allignment of
spaced-out metallic beats and otherworld sounds, this is no warped hip
hop decimation, but a slow-burning head-nodding mangle of beats and
twists put together with a frightening collusion of confidence and the
funk. Awesome. "Tomorrow Morning" ends the side with a meltdown of beats
into shards of ambience, bringing to mind Lexaunculpt's occasional
forays into textural soundtracking, and doing so with a wonderfuly
evocative means of delivery. Logreybeam opens the flip, and provides us
with a glimpse of what to expect from his collaborative project with
Xela (entitled Yasume) which will drop on CCO in the coming months. "Xed
Aut" is ace, the complexities of percussion and tone roll-over from the
A-side, but the method is completely different, the tone less murderous.
Warm glows of sound and tone layer themselves gently, interwieving
between fractures of a slow 4/4 beat and various globes of digital
emissions, reflective and brilliantly messy at the same time.
"Aiscremesupe" finishes the side and the EP off, beautifully crisp
crunches and squashed beats floating, sleepless, in a sea of
unsentimental melodies and cathartic glides, gorgeously reflective
stuff. As is always the way with Shadetek releases, these won't hang
around for long (twofold with that possible Warp stamp of approval),
each sleeve is made up with a unique sticker, limited to 450 copies only
for the world. Precious.
