And so the fabulously ecclectic Lux Nigra imprint returns after an
extended break, delivering a breathtaking new EP from one of the most
remarkable new Berlin dub operators - Zorn. "Apnoe" has been in the
works for quite some time, a complex, heavyweight bulk of percussive
intricacies and dub stabs coming to life with a twilight production
aesthetic that Zorn has carved out for himself over the last few years.
Stick on the mighty title track and you find yourself transported back
to a place that allowed Autechre to record the fabulous "Garbage", a
deep mangled web of dub strings that paces itself uncomfortably over a
nervous weave of drums and bass chugs, keeping the tempo and changing
it's time signature with a jerk of the effects box. Awesome.
"Marianengraben" follows straight on and flips across to the other side
of the horizon, one of those Zorn tracks that centres around lullaby
strings and midnight blue flickers, deeply moving soundscaping that
every now and again the city of Berlin seems so willing to accept,
deeply affecting late night music of the finest kind. "Wu Long Bai Wei",
on the flip, reduces everything to a slow motion rampant dub chug û so
fitting that this record is released in the same week that Basic Channel
finally compile their more recent Burial Mix productions - here
extending the formula into something altogether more decimated. To call
this dub wouldn't quite be true, but the masters at the controls would
understand precisely the language that the bass rumbles here speak. 6
tracks in total. Mighty.
