│ Darkness Falls, The Hunted and Children of Dune. One hell of a year for │
│ Brian Tyler, and it's not even over yet (not to mention he also scored │
│ two additional films this year: Bubba Ho-Tep and The Big Empty). The │
│ capper to the last 12 months which saw the composer shoot to film music │
│ stardom is now here and it is Timeline. Forget the controversy, the │
│ social stigma or a replacement score, and the inaccurate backdoor │
│ political machinations of scorned fanboys. One listen of this towering │
│ action adventure score will put all the rumor and negative spin to rest. │
│ Whether or not the film is worth a damn, the score is a highlight of │
│ this year's score crop. Okay, so your Instant Messenger friend in │
│ Belgium told you, via the Google Translator, that a certain legendary │
│ composer's original score for Timeline was the greatest thing since the │
│ Egg McMuffin. Old news. Regardless of what happened behind-the-scenes of │
│ the troubled Timeline post-production, the proof is in this big bucket │
│ of pudding: Brian Tyler's big, bold and unabashedly old-fashioned (with │
│ modern splashes), Timeline is the definitive action score of 2003 and │
│ one of the best assembled albums of the year. │
│ │
│ From the screeching "Timeline Main Title" to the heroic and instantly │
│ memorable themes heard in "Galvanize The Troops" and "Battalion", this │
│ score proves you can balance the bombastic with the thematic. Timeline │
│ sports no fewer than four themes. Since the film features sequences in │
│ the modern day and 1357 France, Tyler writes appropriately. Portions of │
│ the film in modern times feature sleek percussion and drum loops, │
│ strings and restrained statements of the 8-note main theme ("Enter The │
│ Wormhole", "Transcription Errors" and "Past and Present", "History Will │
│ Change") overtop rolling timpani. The rest of the body of score is │
│ comprised mainly of three additional themes: first the main theme, heard │
│ in "Timeline Main Title" and reprised in the crackling (and I do mean │
│ crackling) action cues ("1357, France" - the action highlight, │
│ "Timeline", "Storming The Castle", "Interruptus" - which bears some │
│ resemblance to Tyler's unflinching Darkness Falls). The second theme, │
│ also known as the "hero theme" ("Galvanize The Troops", the second half │
│ of "Greek Fire") is a noble march for percussion, strings and a soft vox │
│ choir. An extension of this "hero theme", performed by the brass with │
│ gusto, is heard in "The Battle of La Roque". The third major motif is a │
│ love theme for "Lady Claire and Marek" (reprised later in "Eternal") -- │
│ as good a love theme as you'll hear this year or last. The "hero theme" │
│ heard in "Galvanize The Troops" will no doubt become this score's most │
│ attractive selling point. │
│ │
│ The album opens strongly with "Timeline Main Title", and hurdles forward │
│ through one action track after another. Brian's writing here exibits │
│ even greater texture and more dense orchestrations than previously heard │
│ in the uncompromising The Hunted. He has a bevy of percussion │
│ instruments at play, and it is this percussion (one of my favorite │
│ moments from the score is a considerably small one, the first half of │
│ "Greek Fire" where the timp pounds out it's rythm underneath low-brass │
│ chords) that carries the score. It's nice to hear an effort that doesn't │
│ rely on gimmicks. Having listened to Timeline back to back with James │
│ Horner's The Missing, it's easy to see that Timeline features superior │
│ action scoring. No wailing Native chants, no overused and shrill synth │
│ pads. This is just ninety of Los Angeles' finest churning out minute │
│ after minute of thrilling film music. Tyler also successfully scores a │
│ period actioner without the use of period music. Thankfully there are no │
│ string, drum and flute period cues here to bog down the listening │
│ experience. │
│ │
│ Before all of this becomes exhausting, the album does offer up a │
│ considerable amount of variety. Besides action and romance, there's │
│ plenty of tension and suspense. Thankfully this tension and suspense is │
│ of the interesting type -- no atmospheric textures here, but lots of the │
│ good ol' orchestral kind. Brian Tyler keeps the dialogue bits going │
│ ("Mysterioso", with chattering percussion and short main theme │
│ statements before moving into a gauntlet of percussion). This is one │
│ album that is sequence for maximum listenability -- there are no lulls, │
│ no skip-worthy tracks. If there is one complaint, it's that the album │
│ ends on a rather ambiguous note. Without the aid of a suite of themes as │
│ an "End Title", the album merely... Ends. │
│ │
│ Varese Sarabande, who has a two-decade long association with a certain │
│ aforementioned legendary composer, obviously saw artistic value in this │
│ score and have provided forty-minutes of pricey AFM performed music. In │
│ my opinion forty to fifty minutes is the perfect length for any score │
│ album, with few exceptions. Jeff Vaughn's recording, on the Sony Score │
│ Stage, is for stereos with serious cajones. │
│ │
│ Timeline might be Brian Tyler's biggest break to date. And the results │
│ show a composer determined to deliver, not just go through the motions. │
│ The detail and drive in the action scoring and the sheer number of │
│ themes (rare in action pictures these days) translate well to CD. These │
│ are signs of a young composer devoted to scoring film, determined to │
│ head in the complete opposite direction of sonic wallpaper. As we see │
│ our soundtrack heroes of old retire from film music, or pass on, with │
│ composers like Brian Tyler, this tiny genre that occupies the smallest │
│ section of your nearest music store looks to be in good hands. │
