BarcelonaÆs Indigo Raw collective bring up their 11th release with an acid
masterclass from Californian don Blakkat. A pair of accomplished originals
provide the source material for 2 European chargers on remix duty. One of US
house musicÆs unsung heroes, BlakkatÆs West Coast influences are stripped back
and laid bare with an imposing slice of acid on the A. Setting a constant
groove the veteran producerÆs assured pulse gently builds to allow stark drums
to raise the intensity and unlock the energy. This is a track to stretch the
system, twist the floor and get bodies churning. Excite is a bouncing, straight
ahead house jam. Eschewing the subtleties of In Ten City its injection of
energy is immediate and doesnÆt let up. Taking a lighter view on the acid
sound, the A2 has a swagger and a swing that oozes confidence. BlakkatÆs
assured production shines through balancing revving bass lines with stuttered
vocals and deep chords for a sleazy 4am work out. Horacio take Excite to the
dark side, toughening the drums and distorting the bass. Layering the lead acid
line with an industrial rhythm section creates a cavernous echo chamber to be
filled with disjointed synths and yet more acid. The remix adds a dark
undertone to the EP, locking in the groove and taking the mind away to the dark
corners of the club. Local heroes and label mainstays Andre Buljat and Mirus
turn in a light, breezy remix in contrast to HoracioÆs effort. They round off
the EP with a classic piece of woozy deep house. Shiny snares and hats bounce
off a bright, pitch bent hook, while the vocal gives the track a tripped out
edge. IR 11 takes classic production values and turns in a timeless package
which underlines why Blakkat should never be discounted for killer acid and
addictive house jams.
