▓ This album along with its companion Heliocentric ▓
▓ Worlds, Vol. 2 are considered to be among Sun Ra's ▓
▓ most groundbreaking. Perhaps that is due in part to ▓
▓ the increased exposure afforded to Ra and his Solar ▓
▓ Arkestra on the ESP label. Their motto "The Artists ▓
▓ Alone Decide What You Will Hear on Their ESP-Disk" ▓
▓ captured more than just the attention of the band, as ▓
▓ they would ultimately release three titles on the ▓
▓ label. The seven compositions that comprise ▓
▓ Heliocentric Worlds, Vol.1 are examples of the free ▓
▓ or anti-structure jazz that became synonymous with a ▓
▓ majority of Sun Ra's extensive cannon boasting well ▓
▓ over 100 titles. One unifying factor is the ▓
▓ percussive nature of not only this particular band, ▓
▓ but also on the seemingly unduplicable compositions ▓
▓ that Ra and company were exploring in the mid-'60s. ▓
▓ Among Sun Ra's trademarks are the seamless ▓
▓ juxtaposition of contrasting textures and sonic ▓
▓ images. On works such as "Outer Nothingness" and "The ▓
▓ Cosmos," layer upon layer of sound define that ▓
▓ hallowed space that skirts the boundaries of ▓
▓ saturation, without ultimately disintegrating into ▓
▓ chaos. Sonic motifs include the haunting and stark ▓
▓ dominance of the timpani, which is featured as a lead ▓
▓ instrument on the previously mentioned tracks, as ▓
▓ well as "Of Heavenly Things." The latter also ▓
▓ includes a priceless and spirited duet between the ▓
▓ legendary tenor sax player John Gilmore (on timpani) ▓
▓ and Ronnie Boykins on bass. ▓
