The latest addition to the HI family is Danish artist
Eloq, who makes sharply edited future hip-hop riddims
clearly influenced by the UK wave of Rustie, Hud Mo and
Joker. 'Why Don't You', a synthed-out biz-R&B anthem,
draws us in with its martial drums and chipmunk vocals,
but the EP really warms up with 'Gimme More', plangent
minor key chords addressing a strict rudeboy skank.
'Mag-fucking-neto' is bolshy electro-crunk marred ever so
slightly by Eloq's constant sampled shout-outs to himself
("Who's producing the beats? Eloq.."), but we're back on
course with the deadly 'Why Don't You (Rebuild and
Opiated)'- detuned subs and broken snares approaching a
never-before-imagined fusion of 2step and boom-bap
hip-hop. Sharp styles from an evidently very
talented newcomer.
