Herman Dⁿne have been around for some time:
life-long friends songwriter David-Ivar and drummer
Cosmic Neman (as he likes to be known) make up this
impressive Parisian duo. Brought to the fore by the
legendary John Peel, the band has supported the
likes of Arcade Fire.
Upon first listen, æStrange MoosicÆ sounds more
polished and refined than previous efforts. It is
very much a more pop orientated record, whereas
2008 release æNext Year in ZionÆ held a more
intimate feel û particularly on DavidÆs vocals. It
can be in some part related to the role of Adam
Selzer in the producerÆs chair (who has played with
the likes of M.Ward) bringing his own experiences
and ideas to the table.
Highlights include opener æTell Me Something I
DonÆt KnowÆ, which has a whimsical guitar very much
in the Arcade Fire bracket. æMonument ParkÆ has a
lovely 50s Buddy Holly feel to it, while æLay Your
Head On My ChestÆ conveys a feeling of warmth and
love. The album ends with the epic æMagicianÆ, with
wave upon wave of sound gracing your ears, thudding
bass and a forlorn guitar solo bringing æStrange
MoosicÆ to a dramatic end.
Strangely this record fits together so well,
considering they wrote 20 songs independently
without the whole picture in mind, picking and
choosing once they were ready. Their influences can
clearly be heard with bluesy guitars reminiscent of
Keith Richards, and their playfulness between
guitars and lyrics much like Bob Dylan.
Throughout æStrange MoosicÆ you are transported to
America, with those distinct guitar sounds and folk
melodies painting a picture of sitting on the back
of a pick-up truck, with the stereo blasting. Put
simply û itÆs delightful.
