BIO - Mazi
Mazi Namvar, the 29-year old DJ/producer behind Audio
Soul Project, doesn't live in the past. House music, he
says, is not about the way things used to be, it's about
what's happening today and what might be going on
tomorrow. He's a true believer in house music in and of
itself, not someone who sees it as just some disposable
style of dance music with its better days long since
gone.
"For me, the reason I write music specifically, is
because I love house music," he says. "Ultimately it
boils down to a celebration of house music, not a
celebration of disco or jazz or funk or all the things
that influenced me. I'm all about celebrating what I do,
because that's what I love. What I am is house, is
techno, is this thing."
He first became mesmerized by house when he moved to
Chicago in the mid 1980s and he hasn't looked back
since. He's become a true renaissance man of house
music, a well-traveled DJ, a prolific producer and
remixer, a label owner and A&R man with an ear for
finding new talent. A well-respected figure in the
underground community, he's built a reputation as a
forward-thinking artist who refuses to be saddled with
one simplistic description of house music. Thoughtful,
philosophical and deeply self-aware of what he's trying
to do, Mazi makes house music that can both rock a party
and make you think at the same time.
Mazi's abstract productions are miles away from the raw
trax of early Chicago, but the connections are there.
The Iranian-born Mazi first encountered house over the
Chicago airwaves in the 80s, listening to mix shows from
the legendary Hot Mix 5 - including Farley 'Jackmaster'
Funk and Ralphi Rosario - on WBMX-FM. He started hitting
a nightclub called Medusa's; dancing to a rotating
roster of Chicago's finest jocks.
On the dance floor he experienced first-hand the energy
of a teeming nightclub. But he soon became even more
entranced by the DJ in the booth, fascinated by how the
DJs were even more into the music than the clubbers. He
realized that DJing was a driving passion for them, a
powerful force that was more than just a pastime. He
started buying records, learned to DJ and in '93 started
making tracks.
Finding a natural affinity for working with drum
machines and synthesizers, Mazi quickly learned the
rudimentary ropes of production. He set up Shroom
Records in 1994 to release his own forays into abstract
house music, but without any experience in running a
label he found himself swamped. At the suggestion of
Chicago DJ CZR, who did A&R for IHR records in the
mid-90s, Mazi tried making harder music, producing the
kind of abrasive, banging techno fueled house tracks
that were popular in Chicago at the time. Although it
wasn't music that represented Mazi's personal creative
path, it was an opportunity to get his foot in the door
of the music industry and it worked. Mazi released a
string of hard house tracks and began opening up ears in
the house world.
As his discography grew, Mazi began getting more
opportunities to create the music he really wanted to
make. Along with his peers Johnny Fiasco, Lego and Rick
Garcia, Mazi successfully lobbied UC Music A&R boss Andy
Adams to experiment with releasing deeper tracks instead
of just the raw, banging stuff. The result was a new
label, Afterhours, and it showcased a different side to
Mazi's sound. Instead of pure hard house, his
productions fused the filtered-disco Chicago sound with
a more abstract, dubby sensibility and were quickly
embraced by DJs looking for party tracks with a darker
twist.s
Mazi entered a prolific period of studio work and DJ
gigs in the late 90s, holding residencies at famed
Chicago clubs Mad Bar and Tunnel and traveling to raves
and clubs throughout America. With his very own Studio
Nova in place, he began exploring new concepts in his
music and debuted Audio Soul Project with a release on
Moody Recordings.
Audio Soul Project is Mazi's primary vehicle for
collaborations with other artists, from Daniell Spencer
on the first Audio Soul record to the variety of
vocalists, producers and musicians who appear on the
"Community" LP. Audio Soul Project is a fluid, flexible
concept with room to grow and expand. It's not limited
to one style or sound but rather is the result of the
creative process itself - what happens when Mazi
collaborates with another creative individual. He says
collaborations also allow him to function more freely in
the studio.
"A big part of Audio Soul Project, is that it gave me a
little more freedom to step away, to think about the
technical aspects more," he says. "I can be the writer
but I can also step back more and be the producer and
engineer, focus more on technical aspects and sound
quality and arrangements. You hear more drawn-out songs
and more effects with Audio Soul Project. It's really
helped me focus on different things."
Mazi's productions as Audio Soul Project have all been
music that truly represents himself, untainted by A&R
demands and other distractions. Complete creative
control is important for Mazi and was a goal he realized
with the launch of Gourmet Recordings and Simple Soul
Recordings - the two house imprints Mazi owns and runs.
He set up Gourmet via a production and distribution deal
with Strictly Hype Recordings, and for the first time in
his career Mazi had a completely blank palette to work
from. His inspiration for Gourmet was the old acid and
techno tracks he used to listen to, but with a modern,
more abstract take on the sound. Gourmet's initially
minimal, synthetic sound signaled a bold shift in dance
music, and the label has been praised for it's mature,
experimental take on house. But throughout Gourmet's
growing and diverse discography, Mazi has consistently
released music without making any compromises or
concessions towards generating more sales or pleasing a
certain sector of the music scene.
Building on the success of Gourmet, Mazi launched Simple
Soul Recordings in 2001 as a label intended to help
develop new producers. Offering not only a venue for
their music, Mazi also assists in the studio on each and
every Simple Soul release, sometimes contributing his
own remix on the final release. Mazi himself has been
instrumental in pushing the careers of promising new
producers like Nathan Drew Larsen and Joshua Collins,
helping them get their music released on other labels
and encouraging them to consider making music as more
than just a hobby.
With Mazi's profile and reputation spreading quickly
over the last two years, he's stayed focused on the
essentials: DJing live and making nothing but true house
music. Unlike some producers who regard DJing as an
illegitimate creative form, Mazi thinks it a crucial
part of the process of making music. It's a spontaneous
creative act that's separate from studio work, but both
are required to stay balanced as a dance music artist.
"I think you speak differently when you're behind the
decks than when you're behind the keyboards or behind
the sampler," he says. "It's a spontaneous performance
-- you're looking straight into someone's eyes from the
DJ booth and you're getting something from that and
you're responding to it at that moment. A studio can
never be as spontaneous."
As "Community" proves, Mazi isn't using the platform of
an artist album to venture off into genre twisting
dribble that is fashionable for today's dance music
artists. He's not likely to switch gears suddenly and
make a jazz or hip-hop album. He's dedicated and
passionate about house music and excited about what lies
ahead.s
"There's still a lot more to be said with house music,"
he says. "While maintaining its integrity, you can push
it as much as you want, but don't move backward -- as if
something that brought you here is somehow more
legitimate."
