Mojo Hand: The Lightnin' Hopkins Anthology surveys the
music, the legacy of Blues singer, composer, and
Guitarist Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins (1912-1982).
A true pioneer of contemporary american music, he was
not only a direct link to the rural Blues tradition,
but also a key figure in the transition from country
to city Blues.
Hopkins churned out an impressive array of recordings
during four decades, and for a host of labels.
Statisticans have claimed that Hopkins composed
600 songs, often spontaneously in the studio and
onstage.
Compared to today, when record labels and artists
routinely spend hundreds of hours and tens of
thousands of dollars on a slickly produced album,
it seems almost unbelievable that artists in the
1940's, 50's and 60's could leave a three-hour
recording date with four completed masters.
In fact, Lightnin's discography abounds in such
fertile sessions.
