| | The first "Jack 'N' Phil" project, the tag | |
| | team duo of label head Basement Phil Wells | |
| | and Ron "Jack Smooth" Wells (no relation). | |
| | On this release, the techno influences of the | |
| | Basement style really come to the forefront, | |
| | where the ruffneck breaks are backed up with | |
| | a four-by-four beat and basslines that could | |
| | have come straight from Detroit circa '87. | |
| | The A-side contains two mixes of | |
| | "Punishment", a dark fuckin' tune with some | |
| | excellent breakbeats running in the | |
| | background and a moody, pushing bassline. | |
| | However, on the flip, we have two versions of | |
| | "A Trip To Knowledge", the title referring to | |
| | the legendary London techno club which ran | |
| | from 1991 thru 1993, and was headed by twin | |
| | Colins (former Kiss FM DJs Colin Dale and | |
| | Colin Faver). Hence the name of the first | |
| | mix, "Respect 2 The 2 Colins". The following | |
| | mix, "Jack Smooth's Old School Mix", is even | |
| | more purist techno -- almost like something | |
| | off Warp Records, or perhaps a classic bit | |
| | from Jeff Mills. An interesting turn for | |
| | this classic label. | |

| | way... 2004, the year of the return of the | |
| | hardcore! | |
