Based in LA - the city where everyone from Crosstown Rebel's Damian
Lazarus to Switch can now be found enjoying huge parties springing up
everywhere - Binary Records not only run a successful blog
(wearebinary.com/blog), specializing in the sun bleached sounds of
chillwave and dreamwave, its chemically enhanced, club going older
brother, but is also home to young native talent Fabian Ordorica,
better known to his legion of fans as electronic producer Fabian.
Fabian's debut album "Say Goodbye" arrives under a weight of
expectation following support by everyone from BBC Radio One and
bastion of indie cool, NME, through to fellow underground arbiters of
cool like Big Stereo and Too Many Sebastians.
Having hit the blogosphere and download markets with 2009's aptly named
single "Heatwave", Fabian has already cut his teeth producing fellow
label act's LexiconDon's 2010 album "Pink + Blue", turning in soaring
'80s synth jams alongside bittersweet emotionalism reminiscent of Cut
Copy, and remixed electro big-shots like Shinichi Osawa, Night Drugs,
Dragonette and NightWaves.
"Say Goodbye" builds on these excursions, proving Fabian the master of
his sound which draws on electro-pop, Italo disco, freestyle and even
psychedelic West Coast hip-hop, imbuing them all with a characteristic
warmth that comes from living somewhere that only has around 35 days of
rain a year, plus subtlety and savvy absent from much overly-bombastic
US dance.
Album opener "Last Flight" recalls Discovery era Daft Punk with an LA
tan, a vocal anthem to the joyous chaos of hitting a different party
every night, while fan favourite "Heatwave" evokes exactly the kind of
hazy distortion that inspired it, heavy filters controlling its humid
languorousness.
"Dreams To Wishes" launches out onto the dancefloor with a similar
glow, twinkling top lines shimmering above the layered chord washes,
while "This Night" fades away into robotic repetition like a slice of
classic Grum. "Draco" evokes a less sun damaged version of Washed Out,
the slo-mo sound as full-bodied as an LA physique yet still dreamy and
distant, while "Starlight Love" drops the temperature, a wistful shiver
added to Fabian's sonic palette.
"Game Theory" swells with a ghost in the machine emotion, its
retro-futurism sat somewhere between Japanese Telecom and Com Truise,
and closing track "Think" displays yet another face to Fabian's
multi-dimentional sound, taking a trip to famous LA nightspot Low End
Theory via a kind of kaleidoscopic hypercolour funk crafted Hudson
Mohawke of Plant Life.
