░▓█ *John Coltrane was born Sep 23, 1926 in Hamlet, * ██
░▓█ *NC. Coltrane began playing alto saxophone in his* ██
░▓█ *high school band. He briefly attended the * ██
░▓█ *Ornstein School of Music and studied at Granoff * ██
░▓█ *Studios. John Coltrane also began playing in * ██
░▓█ *local clubs. In 1945, Coltrane was drafted into * ██
░▓█ *the navy, and played in the Navy band during * ██
░▓█ *1945-46. After the Navy, John Coltrane switched * ██
░▓█ *to tenor saxophone and played in a number of * ██
░▓█ *bands. * ██
░▓█ * * ██
░▓█ *John Coltrane achieved widespread notice when he* ██
░▓█ *joined Miles Davis in 1955. Coltrane became a * ██
░▓█ *'in demand' player and performed as a sideman, * ██
░▓█ *with a stint in the Thelonious Monk Quartet, and* ██
░▓█ *leader on many recordings, epecially on Prestige* ██
░▓█ *Records. In 1959, John Coltrane signed with * ██
░▓█ *Atlantic Records and recorded Giant Steps, * ██
░▓█ *released in early 1960. He switched to Impulse! * ██
░▓█ *in 1961, releasing many modern jazz classics * ██
░▓█ *including A Love Supreme, until his death in * ██
░▓█ *1967 of liver cancer. * ██
