▄▀░████▓░▀║ this is shite, 3/10, job done. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ If only it was that easy. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ On first impression, this split offers nothing ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ new, nothing to tug at the eyebrow and nothing to ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ raise the sap. As usual, first impressions are ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ soon jumped in a dark alley, given a good kicking ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ and sent home to Momma who slaps them round the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ head for being so presumptuous in the first ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ place. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Be advised then that all this CD needs is a ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ little squeeze to force the thick black essence ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ out of the mass and reveal something of the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ character within. In the case of GHEESTENLAND, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ it's a sense of the archaic, with GRIM FUNERAL ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ it's more a case of trapped under ice. Both ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ contributors belt out traditional Black Metal, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ but each has its own hue and each ultimately ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ prove worthy. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ The bulk of this split is carried by ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ GHEESTENLAND, their music seems to be haunted at ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ times by the ghost of NWOBHM, especially on ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ôVolkerenmoordö. This may be unintentional but as ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ someone who is old enough to remember it, the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ impression remains. Whatever the provenance, it ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ does not detract from the slightly claustrophobic ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ riffs that possess a dull fizz to them so that ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ you are unsure whether they are crawling into the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ grave or scrabbling to get out. The fact remains ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ that there is a classic edge to these tracks, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ blue denim and corpse paint, that said, this is ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Black Metal and many a time the band hammer that ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ point home. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Belts and braces it may be, but GHEESTENLAND ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ provide enough embellishment to maintain ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ interest, most of it is is honest and in keeping ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ with arboreal inclinations. The thudding progress ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ will take you back a few years and the earthy ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ sincerity of these songs gives them a certain ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ charm whilst the anguished spectre of the vocals ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ drags the whole back into the murk. Bouncing ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ between mid and fast pace for the most part, the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ band concentrate on painting the picture rather ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ than ripping the canvas, sometimes the result is ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ that they lack bite but essentially aggression ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ isn't their be all and end all. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ GRIM FUNERAL are an altogether frostier prospect. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ It's no exaggeration to say that you could skate ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ across their riffs, this is brass monkey Black ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Metal, don't lick the CD because your tongue will ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ stick to it. The sheet ice guitar contrasts with ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ the muffled pummel of the drums, the clear riding ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ shotgun with the opaque, the simple composition ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ slides along with cold vigour, the lack of ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ friction allowing the movement to become ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ hypnotic. This absence of purchase ensures that ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ GRIM FUNERAL sound more chaotic than their mates ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ but the incline means that the progress made is ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ unrelenting. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ The blurring of instrumental boundaries on these ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ two lengthy tracks dictates that you absorb the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ whole, sit still and be mesmerized by the rush of ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ice crystals blown up by the music. When the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ tempo picks up you are in a white-out, frost bite ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ guaranteed and disorientation to be expected, ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ don't go wandering, you won't find your way back. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Both songs tend to follow a formula of an ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ insistent beginning, a gathering of momentum ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ leading to hell freezing blizzard towards the ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ end. It works and creep of the cold opens a door ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ for the hypothermic blast to really chill your ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ core. ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Broadly speaking, GRIM FUNERAL suit my taste ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ more, I prefer the trance inducing surge of dirge ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ they create. If you prefer something with more ║▀░▓████░▀▄
▄▀░████▓░▀║ Metal to it, then GHEESTENLAND would be your ║▀░▓████░▀▄
