No pale imitations here, instead, hard-line hip hop and
rough raps. You get `60s pop with "Girls," a bit of metal
mania on "Fight For your Right" and a Latin lilt undulating
under "Slow Ride." Do not pass Go without checking "She's
Crafty." It's an exceedingly clever bad-girl saga with a
sing-song chorus, packed with irresistible beats. The
bad-boy routine moves in to best effect with "Posse In
Effect" (I love the echo on this one), an exercise in
controlled chaos, as well as the rousing "No Sleep Till
Brooklyn" and "Time To Get Ill," a fitting finale. Perhaps
now "Slow And Low" will get the attention it deserves from
rock `n' rollers. Licensed To Ill just does not let up; it's
a long LP, but your attention and feet will never lag.
Production, by Rick Rubin, is a melange of hardrockin'
rhythm and scraps of old faves cut in. Here's a blast of
energy. Send it straight to your pleasure-center and to your
listeners.
