█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ Gary War emerged from the lo-fi, █▓ █
█ █▓ synth-heavy world of Ariel Pink in █▓ █
█ █▓ 2007. The New York-based War has █▓ █
█ █▓ released two LPs and several EPs of █▓ █
█ █▓ lo-fi psychedelic electronica and █▓ █
█ █▓ spacey futuristic trip-outs since █▓ █
█ █▓ then. █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ The new Police Water EP continues █▓ █
█ █▓ this weird, wild path. Each song █▓ █
█ █▓ offers multilayered tangles of '80s █▓ █
█ █▓ industrial new wave and ghostly, █▓ █
█ █▓ rippling vocals over thin, thumping █▓ █
█ █▓ bass and drum-machine rhythms. █▓ █
█ █▓ Think Skinny Puppy, but not as █▓ █
█ █▓ strident or dark. And far more █▓ █
█ █▓ complex. Only after several listens █▓ █
█ █▓ do song structures begin to emerge █▓ █
█ █▓ from the storm clouds of noise. █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ This is what dance pop might sound █▓ █
█ █▓ like in the year 2040. One can █▓ █
█ █▓ picture post-funk androids busting █▓ █
█ █▓ clipped, rigid moves to cuts like █▓ █
█ █▓ "On Its Head" and "Who And Why" ù █▓ █
█ █▓ or at the very least, Mike "Dieter" █▓ █
█ █▓ Myers shouting, "Now is the time on █▓ █
█ █▓ Sprockets ven vee dance!" █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ In contrast, the relatively █▓ █
█ █▓ uncluttered "Born Of Light" and █▓ █
█ █▓ "Sirens" are more immediately █▓ █
█ █▓ accessible, and thus more suitable █▓ █
█ █▓ for human dancing. █▓ █
█ █▓ Glittering-diamond synth lines lend █▓ █
█ █▓ the songs an upbeat mood. █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ But don't be fooled. This is not █▓ █
█ █▓ casual-listening music. It requires █▓ █
█ █▓ an investment of time and █▓ █
█ █▓ concentration. If you're willing to █▓ █
█ █▓ pay the price, you'll be nicely █▓ █
█ █▓ rewarded. █▓ █
