Grasscut is the latest project from songwriter
and film composer Andrew Philips, an artist
also known for his contributions to the One
Giant Leap project (which saw him working as
vocalist and arranger amongst the likes of
Baaba Maal and Neneh Cherry). This debut album
is a tremendously accomplished affair with an
expansive scope. Philips calls upon all his
experience as an arranger for this project,
pooling great pop ideas with complex,
intertwining instrumentation, as heard on the
tricky beat programming and incisive string
orchestrations of 'Old Machines' or the
borderline insane 'Muppet' which binds
elaborate electronic programming with tuned
percussion and what sounds like a raygun
shoot-out halfway through. Noisy, ambitious and
often rather beautiful in a boistrous sort of
fashion, this debut is said to draw influence
from the likes of Robert Wyatt, Vaughan
Williams, Brian Wilson and Gavin Bryars, and as
scattershot a selection as that appears to be,
such references don't seem too untoward in the
light of ornately devised concoctions like the
excellent 'Meltwater'.
