Release Notes:

We must confess to overlooking Jonathan Jeremiah based on two rather flimsy
factors: 1. That his name reminded us of Joey Jeremiah from Degrassi Junior High
(not in itself a bad thing, but we wouldnÆt want to hear a record by him). And
2. His hairÆs a bit ôcollege Jesusö. The kind of bloke you expect to see walking
barefoot through the canteen. You know the kind. But our prejudices nearly
prevented us from hearing a rather lovely record. So thank goodness for PRs
emailing us and telling us to listen to the things they send.
Jonathan is the first through a door thatÆs been opened by Rumer and a rekindled
interest in pop that sounds classic, timeless, sumptuous and orchestral. But
unlike Rumer, Mr JeremiahÆs distinctly 60s swagger doesnÆt feel grafted on; heÆs
a crooner from the Neil Diamond/David Ackles school of romantic troubled souls.
HeÆll shag you and shun you, but heÆs read all the right books and probably has
long dark nights of writing poetry and smoking moodily. John MartynÆs mentioned
in the press release, and there are hints of that in the subtler, voice and
acoustic guitar songs. But thereÆs a little touch of Walker Brothers-era Scott
Walker here too, or Tom Jones if we didnÆt hate Tom Jones. The arrangements and
band are mixed to authentic perfection, giving that
everyone-playing-in-the-same-room-at-the-same-time sound. A Solitary Man is a
treat for ears tired of over-loud modern compression, with warm French horns
emerging from soothing strings, backed by a drummer who sounds like he wears a
suit.
What we know about Mr Jeremiah could barely fill a Tweet. HeÆs of Anglo
Indian/Irish stock. HeÆs 30. HeÆs been to America. And thatÆs it. There arenÆt
any big hits here (Jonathan is clearly an albums man) and lyrically, girl,
thereÆs not much going on, girl, except, a variety of girls he either loves or
doesnÆt understand or who donÆt understand him, girl. With occasionally clunkers
like: ôIÆm gonna do the best I can to keep yourself satisfiedö (eh?) But what he
lacks in substance he more than makes up for in louche style and old fashioned
musical flair.
