The Array are a band from Dublin who write instrumental
post-rock/alternative music with an electronic feel. Merging electronic
instruments, found sounds and computer manipulations with traditional
instruments, such as guitar, bass, clarinet and melodica, their music
has an organic feel set against a progressive electronic backdrop.
The Array incorporates elements of Arabic and Bulgarian music, Dub, New
Wave, Techno, and Ambient to create a unique sound, one that will please
and surprise Irish audiences.
"What we are interested in doing is creating music that prompts an
emotional response in people. We use every tool we can to achieve this.
Sometimes it's instruments, sometimes it's electronics and sometimes
it's found sounds, but ultimately we're not concerned about the process
it's the end product. The last thing we want to do is to make music that
is bland or ignorable".
"Our music offers something a little different from most Irish acts. It
would be nice to think that Ireland would be known abroad for something
other than rock bands, boy bands and traditional music. We are part of a
new musical movement emerging from Ireland."
The Array was formed in January 2000 by Karl Burke and Giles Packham.
While primarily a studio-based band, they also play live on selected
occasions such as the "Winter" electronic music festival at The Project,
Dublin in June 2001.
Giles (27) is a classically trained musician and graduated from the same
TCD Music and Media Technologies class, which spawned such acts as David
Kitt and The Jimmy Cake. He has also remixed the works of acts as
diverse as Cane 141 and The Saw Doctors, written music for the Frank
McGuinness' play "Bag Lady" (New York, Lincoln Center, 2001), and scored
the films "How to Cheat in the Leaving Certificate" (1997) and "Ride"
(New York, Dublin Docklands Festival, Canada, Moscow and elsewhere). He
has also written music for television, most notably the theme music for
"From a Whisper to a Scream"- a six-part documentary on Irish popular
music based on Niall Stokes' book of the same title.
Karl (33), a practicing solicitor in a previous incarnation, has been
writing and recording for the last 12 years and is self-taught in his
specialties of sound design and synthesis. He also plays guitar, bass,
and piano. Karl has scored several short films for directors in New York
and Los Angeles. He was a member of the Dublin group Plemelj, which
included the noted jazz drummer Kieran Phillips from 1991-1994 and lived
in Berlin from 1994 to 1995, where he concentrated on fine art painting.
