Clever programming influenced by fusion and afrobeat with a very
organic, live feel. That was the formula for the succes of
Beanfield's second album, 1999's (!) 'Human Patterns'. It set the
standard for the string of nujazz releases that followed from bands
like Les Gammas and Jazzanova.
Probably the finest Compost album-release so far, anticipation was
high for a follow up. And now with 'Seek' Jan Krause and Tobias
Meggle have made a 'different' album, but one that proves they have
evolved as producers. Of course the jazz influences are still there
but now the focus is more on soul and proper songwriting.
For that they needed some good voices and co-writers and they sure
found the right person! Gonkyborg wonderboy and supertalent Ernesto
(aka Jonathan BΣckelie who records for Hollow records) is featured on
four of the album's tracks and really takes the Beanfield productions
to another level. Smooth opener 'Chosen' and 'Close To You' are
wonderful soul tracks, but also on the off-beat house stomper
'Someone Like You' Ernesto's voice is the perfect companion to the
music. Keep an eye open for this man!
'The Season' was the only vocal track on the previous album - and an
underground hit - with the lovely voice from Bajka. 'Tides' and the
brilliant 'Home' enjoy her warm vocals on this one; uptempo tracks
which - take my word for it - we will be hearing a lot in the coming
months!
However, the instrumentals are also very enjoyable. 'Mr. Park' has a
very sensual groove where guitar and bass make perfect bedpartners...
'15 &8' is the "jazz track" on the album with twisted keyboard stabs.
I haven't seen any credit notes yet so I don't know how many live
instruments they used in the studio, but again the overall feeling is
very organic. Even the more electronic tracks like the scorching
'Vertigoheel' and especially 'Cargo' have that trademark warm sound.
This album can be described in one word really: it is beautiful. With
today's technology we are overwhelmed with perfectly produced albums.
'Seek' - of course - also has that flawless production but it has
that one thing that will make you want to hear it again and again:
SOUL!
