During 1951-52, Dizzy Gillespie had his own record label, Dee Gee.
Having been forced to break up his big band in 1950 due to the
impossible financial situation, he was working regularly with a small
group which for a short while that included a young tenor named John
Coltrane; the future giant's first recorded solo ("We Love to Boogie")
is one of the highlights of this CD. Gillespie is heard in a wide
variety of novelties, bop romps and ballads on this diverse program.
There are many vocals from him and Joe Carroll, a funny parody of
Louis Armstrong on "Umbrella Man," and one extended performance on the
fiery "The Champ"; all of the other cuts are in the three-minute range.
