│║ ... And I mean that in the best way possible. If ║ │
│║ all you look for in power metal is a bunch of ║ │
│║ songs trying to out-holy-fuck-this-is-catchy ║ │
│║ each other delivered with a powerful voice ║ │
│║ accompanied by some slick solos, then yeah, this ║ │
│║ is the quintessential album for you. However, ║ │
│║ lovers of kvlt metal should probably look ║ │
│║ elsewhere, as this album is more upbeat and ║ │
│║ positive than, dare I say it, most pop music. ║ │
│║ Keyboards are EVERYWHERE, and the sugary ║ │
│║ melodies are more infectious than gonorrhea. ║ │
│║ Honestly, I could hear the first second or two ║ │
│║ of pretty much any song on this CD and instantly ║ │
│║ recognize it, and hum right along with it. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ But that's not the only reason this CD is good ║ │
│║ (you know, for flower metal standards). The band ║ │
│║ members fully embrace their non-br00tality and ║ │
│║ put 110% into it, especially their singer, ║ │
│║ Alessio. He sounds like he genuinely believes ║ │
│║ all the happy-go-lucky crap he's saying. Not to ║ │
│║ say that everybody else is chopped liver, but ║ │
│║ Alessio is definitely a stand-out player on this ║ │
│║ album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Right from the get-go, you know what you are in ║ │
│║ for, but thankfully, not all the songs sound ║ │
│║ like different variations of the first song ║ │
│║ (unlike their power metal contemporaries, ║ │
│║ DragonForce). You got your usual set of fast- ║ │
│║ paced cookers, some mid-paced numbers, and the ║ │
│║ obligatory ballad or two. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The intro is, well, an intro. But there's a lot ║ │
│║ of effort put into it to suck in the listener. ║ │
│║ Heck, it almost sounds like the trailer to a ║ │
│║ fantasy-RPG kind of video game. It could have ║ │
│║ been cut, but it's good for what it's worth. ║ │
│║ After that, it's pretty much nothing but smooth ║ │
│║ sailing. The first two songs, "Find My Heaven" ║ │
│║ and "Galaxies Unknown" are bombastic and full of ║ │
│║ life. The production evens everybody out so the ║ │
│║ keyboards are never too over-whelming over the ║ │
│║ (generic) guitar riffs (except, where the hell ║ │
│║ is the bass? Dammit). "Hold On To Love" reminds ║ │
│║ one a lot of "Jump" by Van Halen, but a lot ║ │
│║ slower, and, well, not crap. "Diamond Sky" could ║ │
│║ have been the opening track, it's just so damn ║ │
│║ catchy! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ "The Message" slows things down a bit, and this ║ │
│║ song is probably the only track I might skip on ║ │
│║ occasion while listening to the whole album ║ │
│║ through. Something about messages being left on ║ │
│║ a phone really detract from the fantasy-laden ║ │
│║ mood the other tracks set on the album, and the ║ │
│║ spoken bit at the end that gets slightly drowned ║ │
│║ out by the somber piano gets pretty annoying ║ │
│║ after a few listens. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ But fear not! After that, it's back to making ║ │
│║ songs that will stick in your head forever and ║ │
│║ ever and never leave, my favorite probably being ║ │
│║ the speedy "Strike Force." The final two tracks ║ │
│║ (of the edition without the bonus track) go back ║ │
│║ to the proggy tendencies hinted at with Power ║ │
│║ Quest's previous effort, "Neverworld." The bonus ║ │
│║ track "The Longest Night" fits right into the ║ │
│║ album; it probably should have been left on all ║ │
│║ pressings of the album, and not just in the ║ │
│║ sense of "All right! More Power Quest!" It's ║ │
│║ actually a very strong and experimental track ║ │
│║ that stands well on its own, with a nifty a ║ │
│║ Capella intro followed shortly thereafter by a ║ │
│║ gloomy (wait, this IS Power Quest, right?!) ║ │
│║ organ and (as I'm sure is expected of Power ║ │
│║ Quest by now) a damn catchy chorus. The middle ║ │
│║ part scarily makes me think of something Dream ║ │
│║ Theater might have left off of "Systematic ║ │
│║ Chaos." ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Will you be embarrassed listening to this around ║ │
│║ your friends? Probably. Are you going to go to ║ │
│║ Power Quest concerts and mosh to "Diamond Sky?" ║ │
│║ Hell no. Is it metal? Barely. Who is this album ║ │
│║ going to appeal to? Well, if you think ║ │
│║ Stratovarius and DragonForce lacks balls, you're ║ │
│║ definitely not going to like this. But for ║ │
│║ flower metal enthusiasts such as myself, this is ║ │
│║ right up there with early Sonata Arctica and ║ │
│║ "Infinite/Elements" era-Stratovarius. My rating ║ │
│║ is just based on personal reference, as I know ║ │
│║ this isn't going to appeal to everybody, so take ║ │
│║ from my review what you will, and don't go by ║ │
│║ numbers alone. ║ │
