│ DJ and track maker Makoto Miura has been around on the club │
│ scene for a number of years in Tokyo appearing at events such │
│ as Tatsuo Sunaga's World Standard and Kei Kobayashi's Routine │
│ Jazz to name just a couple. Following various releases for the │
│ Comedy Tonight label, Je Suis Snob sees him releasing his debut │
│ full-length album. │
│ │
│ A quick glance at the album title and the retro artwork shows a │
│ clear French influence, and in the opening track Je Suis Snob ~ │
│ Ouverture, Emi Necozawa, guesting on narrative and poetry and │
│ sounding like something straight out of a nouvelle vague film │
│ of the late fifties, explains the concept behind the album. The │
│ album is an hommage to the enfant terrible of French letters in │
│ the fifties, Boris Vian. Described as a journey through the │
│ fifties Saint Germain des Pres as imagined by a foreigner, the │
│ album features ten tracks all named after works by Vian. │
│ Miura has cleverly put together a collection of tracks for the │
│ twenty-first century dance floor based around samples of music │
│ originally created in the fifties and sixties, helped out by │
│ Emi Necozawa's French narratives, Ray Tekuramori on scat and │
│ some rapping from Riki Azuma. J'irai Cracher Sur Vos Tombes and │
│ L'Arrache-Coeur stand out as really strong jazz dance tunes, │
│ whilst elsewhere the album veers towards a more whimsical mood, │
│ as seen on Elles Se Rendent Pas Compte and Trouble Dans Les │
│ Andains. │

│ In a way, this kind of cut and paste track making from a DJ is │
│ something a throwback to the past, and by making tracks that │
│ are a tribute to a bygone era, Je Suis Snob is an album with a │
│ retro feel on two counts, but that doesn't stop it from being │
│ enormous fun. │
