The Norwegian guitarist Lars Haavard Haugen opens
his first ever solo album with the composition "A
walk in the Park". It becomes immediately apparent
that the music contained within Six Strings and
the Truth is the result of very little park
strolling. Lars Haavard Haugen is famous in his
native Norway (and beyond) for his role as a
guitarist in multi Spellemannpris (Norwegian
Grammy)-winner Hellbillies.
In fact Hellbillies was just recently nominated
for a Spellemann in the country category for last
year's huge album success Leite etter Lykka.
Hellbillies hold down the position as Norway's
number one band, a standing built on a succession
of high quality releases in the twenty years since
the band's formation.
Add to that continues road work that has brought
the band a following reminiscent of Grateful Deads
dead heads. Lars Haavard and his fellow musicians
in Hellbillies grew up in the small community of
┼l in Hallingdal, deep in the heart of Norway.
There the two guitar playing brothers, Aslag and
Lars Haavard (Aslag is the singer in Hellbillies),
were treated to the records brought home from the
US by an older brother who had crossed the
Atlantic to study. The music that particulary
caught the brother's attention were the albums by
The Allman Brothers Band and Grateful Dead. When
Hellbillies arrived on the Norwegian music scene
with their own special version of country rock,
sung in their local ┼l-tongue, the music also came
with sophisticated references to the music of the
two historical american bands.
Actually, later in their career Hellbillies got a
hit with an ┼l-translation of Grateful Dead's
"Friend of the Devil" and in 2000 the Haugen
brothers were part of a eight piece band that did
a tribute to The Allman Brothers under the name
Whipping Post. One of Whipping Post's shows were
recorded by NRK, national radio, and also released
on record by German label Glitterhouse.
As a consumate musician Lars Haavard dug deeper
into the southern rock world and came across the
instrumental virtuouses of Georgia band Dixie
Dregs, led by the guitar player Steve Morse (also
Deep Purple). Lars Haavard quotes Dixie Dreggs in
general, and specifically Steve Morse first two
solo albums, as vital sources of inspiration for
what he does on Six Strings and the Truth.
He also wants to mention the records made by the
guitar trio Hellecasters, Will Ray, John Jorgenson
(Desert Rose Band) and Jerry Donahue (Fairport
Convention). Six Strings and the Truth was
recorded at Hellbillies own professional level
recording facilities at Spydeberg, 45 minutes
outside of Oslo. The recordings were done in the
trio format with drummer Trond Augland and bass
player Kyrre Saetran and started as far back as
2007.
The nine pieces of music on the album were all
written by Lars Haavard and includes a reworking
of the title track to the 2001 Hellbillies album
Urban Twang (an album produced by Stephen Bruton)
retitled "Urban Twang (Slight return)". Writer
Tony Conley (Rock Guitar Daily with Tony Conley)
argues that what sets the music gushing from Six
Strings and the Truth appart from most comparable
records, is Lars Haavards ability to hold on to
melodic qualities.
