Singer Evelyn "Champagne" King first came to
fame with the million-selling '70s disco
smashes "Shame" and "I Don't Know If It's
Right". Born July 1, 1960, in the Bronx, NY,
she had a showbiz lineage. Her uncle was
actor/singer/dancer Avon Long, who first
played Sportin' Life in the play Porgy and
Bess and later starred in the '70s play
Bubblin' Brown Sugar. Her father, Erik King,
was a singer and often augmented groups that
appeared at New York's Apollo Theater. By her
teens, King had relocated to Philadelphia with
her mother, and began singing in several
groups. To make ends meet, King and her mother
became cleaning women. For a teenager, King's
voice was quite mature; many at first thought
she was a grown woman.
GCP vintage vinyl.. Feel the breeze of the
legendary King on the 12-inch single featuring
the "High Horse (U.S. Remix)" spawning on the
a-side produced by Allen George and Fred
McFarlane for Terrible Two Productions.
George/McFarlane also produced the original
version that came from King's 1985 RCA album
"A Long Time Coming", which was critically
rated as far from the standards of King's late
70's and early-80's material.
This single's b-side features King's 1978 hit
"Shame" in an extended version. That record is
King's biggest chart-climber, peaking at #9 on
the main US Billboard Chart. However, "Shame"
only reached #7 on the US R&B chart - a
position which was topped by later King hits
"I'm In Love", "Love Come Down" and "Flirt".
Record finishes off with non-album track "Take
A Chance (Long Version)" which remained an
exclusive feature to this very 12-inch vinyl
single, until it was added as a bonus track to
the remastered 2007 version of the "A Long
Time Coming" album.
