A cursory listen to the first track of Ryan DriverÆs latest solo outing might
make you think the beloved and prolific local player has gone Nashville.
Buoyed by Stew CrookesÆ feather-light pedal steel, Driver floats a series of
aphoristic head-scratchers, like ôIÆm not over here, and IÆm not over her.ö
The country vibe is just a brief departure, but in every other respect, ôDead
End Streetö ù and WhoÆs Breathing itself ù are vintage Driver, from his
affectionately halting tenor to the delicate arrangements (the infectious
ôEverything Must Spinö) to his lyrics, which can be witty, arcane, sometimes
melancholy (ôBlue Skies DonÆt Careö) but always considered and artful. Like
ôDead End Street,ö just because WhoÆs Breathing might make you laugh doesnÆt
mean itÆs not serious.
