| All major cities have a unique character. New York is energy, |
| Tokyo is the future and London, well, London is truly |
| cosmopolitan. It is a town where most of the world's nations have |
| congregated bringing with them their cultures which have added so |
| much to the host nation's way of life. |
| |
| You can judge that last statement by the music London produces, |
| music which this compilation seeks to reflect and celebrate in all |
| its diversity. This collection should not be judged as a blueprint |
| for some spurious "scene". The groups and individuals whose work |
| make up this album are far too singleminded and individual for |
| such an easy reading. |
| |
| What they share in common is this: a fevrent desire to inhale and |
| soak up different and exciting musics which they then translate |
| into their own individual voices thus creating a new and vibrant |
| language and sound. |
| |
| Historically, London has always been among the leaders in this |
| field. Since the arrival in the 50s of large numbers of African |
| and Carribean people it has been their music, coupled with a heavy |
| American input, which has accompanied most of Britain's significant |
| youth cults. Unfortunately, the downside of such scenes has been |
| the approximation by unscrupulous musicians and record companies |
| who have cashed in by watering down the content and changing up the |
| image. But that's another story. |
| |
| Suffice to say the obvious experimentation and discovery, coupled |
| with a determined and very welcome unwillingness to compromise, |
| that runs throughout this collection is proof enough of the music's |
| integrity. |
| |
| Slick, sophisticated and chart potential are words that do not |
| spring to mind when you play this album. Innovative, intriguing and |
| exciting come much closer to describing the music as does the term |
| "e c l e c t r o", defined in my dictionary as anything goes. |
| |
| That each track vibrates with such reasonance is due to London's |
| recent club renaissance which has seen a huge variety of music |
| attracting people to the dancefloor. You name it and if it has the |
| spirit we will dance to... ...it. Without a doubt every group or |
| individuals that is represented here has been truly inspired by the |
| emergence of clubs where the musical policy is adventrous and the |
| audience is truly mixed up. |
| |
| Indeed, the album's compilers, Justin Langlands and Dave Henley, |
| who make up the group Pressure Drop, began life as DJ's before |
| making the logical move into recording. Their track, the haunting |
| but always uplifting "Everything Will Be Alright" is a version that |
| is exclusive to this LP as is Joanna Law's "Night Rain" which moves |
| with great subtlety and grace. |
| |
| Elsewhere, you will hear echoes from all over the world. Alpha and |
| Omega's "Further East" superbly welds together the unlikely |
| combination of Indian and Jamaican music. |
| |
| 11.59's contribution can best be described as rap dub whilst |
| D*Note's "The Scheme Of Things" is a superb fusion of rap, jazz and |
| funk. |
| |
| The Meta-4 and Moving In The Right Direction contributions, "Mind's |
| Intellect" and "Be There" respectively, are great examples of how |
| far British rap has come in the past few years, nodding to New York |
| but always keeping the sound of the Capital in the mix. |
| |
| On another level, Elaine Vassell's slow burning "Show It To Me" and |
| Raw Stylus's inspired "Pushing Against The Flow" easily capture the |
| spirit of funk motion but in terms of arrangement and |
| instrumentation have a life of their own. |
| |
| London Underground is a great taster of where the Capital's |
| citizens have been at for the last four years. Despite the worrying |
| takeover of the music business by huge multi-nationals whose |
| growing presence is literally stilfling any music that is. |
