The band members are Anne Marit Bergheim, Marianne Sveen, Solveig
Heilo and Turid J°rgensen. Their music mixes genres such as folk
music, pop, rock, country and balkan music. Even though the members
are from Norway, their lyrics are English. The four members switch
instruments often and have a stated goal of playing instruments they
haven't played before.[1] They play more than 25 different
instruments, including some which are quite unusual in a band
setting, such as accordion, contrabass balalaika, zither, ukulele and
melodica. The band collaborates with Mats Ryb° who has written
several of the band's songs.
The band cites many influences that include, Goran Bregovic', Danny
Elfman, Django Reinhardt and Knutsen & Ludvigsen. Also, for the
complete radio broadcast, the band states that they are not only
inspired by folk but cartoons as well. They were inspired by Donald
Duck, Tom and Jerry, and many of the old cartoons. They were also
inspired by all the Disneys. Marianne Sveen says "We don't even have
to sound like it, its just if we picture that music, or feel it in
our heart and play something completely different, it would be sort
of influenced by that anyway." This is all referring to cartoons.
Later in the interview, Solveig Heilo states that these cartoons are
beautiful because if you see a ship or a pipe, they have a
personality, and everything becomes an instrument. "He's playing on a
tooth of a hippo and it suddenly becomes a xylophone. So thats how we
think when we play as well. We have personalities in the instruments
and we play around with them like they were live."
In 2008 the band was chosen as one of the finalists in NRK's yearly
Ur°rt competition for unsigned artists, and got a third place for
their song A Bar in Amsterdam. The music video of the song was made
by Youtube celebrity Lasse Gjertsen.
