  ▀ ▐       this 3 track ep is the first cd release for duo, karl         ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       webb and mark kyriacou, since their appearance on the         ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       extensive xen cuts anthology. this temperamental and          ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       succinct offering starts with the title track,                ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       'beginningless': loose drums humbly traverse time with        ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       melancholic, economically played guitar - wistful horns       ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       are introduced and lament to create a pensive feel.           ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       there is an interesting juxtaposition of real-world           ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       sounding drums, guitar and horns balanced against the         ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       supporting electronic domain of sweeping harmonious           ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       effects. a more menacing theme takes form as 'airfling'       ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       follows with a far sleazier, late night, back-room            ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       session; this track is markedly episodic as quiet lulls       ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       divide up energetic flurries of jazzy, post-rock              ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       activity. the final track, 'safe self tester' starts by       ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       building orchestral power only to change direction into       ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       funky drummed breaks and visceral double bass; layers         ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       of orchestral strings build, lull and kick off again          ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       with tense car-chase action. both tracks 2 and 3 share        ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       similar narrative motifs and cinematic influence:             ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       sometimes reminiscent of the dark seedy world of 'taxi        ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       driver' but more often resembling the funky-assed             ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       snare, rim-shot and bass action of lalo schifrin. the         ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       seedy and dangerous angle of these tracks is fine -           ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       it'd be nice to have a little more of the charm               ▌ ▀
  ▀ ▐       demonstrated on track 1, but loka more than make up for       ▌ ▀
