As we all know, the release of an anticipated album can sometimes be a
worrying affair. ItÆs not uncommon in the world of underground electronic
music for an artist to release a slew of heavyweight 12's, only to then put
out a sub-standard Long Player. Fortunately for us, Ramon Lisandro Quezada
aka DJ Qu doesnÆt seem interested in perpetuating this trend.

Released in three parts, Gymnastics is the first album proper on Strength
Music, the imprint Qu set up in 2005 to showcase mostly his own
productions, and shows that the LP format is actually the perfect platform
in which to present QuÆs varied sonic pallette. Gymnastics primarily works
within the parameters of House, but with tracks like ôGet Sumö and ôMixing
Roomô, Qu invites the strong influence of Techno into proceedings as weÆre
pulled into bleep flecked tracks with deep-cutting acid lines and
repetitive machine rhythms. The less menacing ôJus EdÆs Aerialö not only
references QuÆs link with Underground Quality in itÆs title, but has an
obvious connection sonically with Jus EdÆs label, with itÆs mangled
saxophone sample juxtaposed against the slap-bass groove and minimal synth
work. Another unique track in relation to the rest of the LP is ôMud The
Congoô, a thumping percussive workout, devoid of melody and stripping House
down to the raw bone, relentless tribalistic rhythms weaving themselves
     around each other.

Although it was released in three seperate stages, clearly QuÆs M.O for the
album was to bring together an eclectic range of sounds, yet still retain
the feeling of the work as being a cohesive whole. No mean feat considering
that when most artists try this they usually miss the mark, but with
careful attention to detail and selection, Gymnastics is without a doubt a
dynamic offering that can be classed as an actual album, as opposed to a
compilation of tracks thrown together over multiple 12's.

     11 years.. and counting :)

     enjoy!
