█░█▒ You can call it a coincident. You can call it a ▒█░█
█░█▒ lucky break. Or you can call it destiny. Whatever ▒█░█
█░█▒ the explanation is, Magnus Carlson and the Moon Ray ▒█░█
█░█▒ Quintet have come a cross something truly special. ▒█░█
█░█▒ You could hear this already on their self-titled ▒█░█
█░█▒ debut that was released in the autumn of 2009. And ▒█░█
█░█▒ it is even more evident on their new release album ▒█░█
      █░█▒ Echoes. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ It all began with a phone call from Swedish A&R ▒█░█
█░█▒ veteran Kjell Andersson, a man with impeccable ▒█░█
█░█▒ taste and a penchant for great concepts. He wanted ▒█░█
█░█▒ to place Weeping WillowsÆ lead singer Magnus ▒█░█
█░█▒ Carlson in a jazz setting. The inspiration was the ▒█░█
█░█▒ album that John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman ▒█░█
      █░█▒ released in 1963. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ At this point Magnus was not a huge jazz ▒█░█
█░█▒ connoisseur. Sure, as most historically interested ▒█░█
█░█▒ vocalists he had listened to Frank Sinatra och Chet ▒█░█
█░█▒ Baker, but round about there his knowledge of jazz ▒█░█
█░█▒ ended. But Magnus had met well-renowned jazz ▒█░█
█░█▒ trumpeter and producer Goran Kajfes and they ▒█░█
█░█▒ started talking, as musicians often do, about ▒█░█
█░█▒ finding something to work on together. Now the ▒█░█
█░█▒ pieces started to fall into place. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ Goran was soon joined by saxophonist Per ▒█░█
█░█▒ öRusktrΣskö Johansson, Carl Bagge on keys, drummer ▒█░█
█░█▒ Lars Skoglund and Peter Forss on bass. As opposed ▒█░█
█░█▒ to Magnus these guys had all played in various jazz ▒█░█
█░█▒ constellations previously, but also had experience ▒█░█
█░█▒ from pop music project. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ Magnus and the band, which was named The Moon Ray ▒█░█
█░█▒ Quintet, decided they did not want to do the usual ▒█░█
█░█▒ standards. Instead youÆll find songs like Riders On ▒█░█
█░█▒ The Storm by The Doors and The ZombiesÆ Time Of The ▒█░█
█░█▒ Season in new interpretations on the debut album. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ What initially only was intended as a one-off ▒█░█
█░█▒ project, quickly grew to something much bigger. ▒█░█
█░█▒ Magnus Carlson and the five gentlemen in the ▒█░█
█░█▒ quintet became a band. So, even before their debut ▒█░█
█░█▒ album was released, this new group was already out ▒█░█
█░█▒ on the road building an enthusiastic following. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ They also quickly realised that they wanted to ▒█░█
█░█▒ record more music together a group. The chemistry ▒█░█
█░█▒ was just too great to ignore. The sound theyÆve ▒█░█
█░█▒ created together was spot on. Everyone contributed, ▒█░█
█░█▒ everyone was essential to complete the overall ▒█░█
      █░█▒ picture. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ Prior to album no. 2, Magnus and the Moon Rays ▒█░█
█░█▒ decided to change record label. They choose up and ▒█░█
█░█▒ coming indie label Tri-Sound, part of the Cosmos ▒█░█
█░█▒ Music Group. Reason being that they wanted an ▒█░█
█░█▒ independent but far reaching partner, with its ears ▒█░█
█░█▒ close to the ground and its heart truly in music. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ Under the supervision of Janne Hansson the band ▒█░█
█░█▒ once again gathered in the legendary Atlantis ▒█░█
█░█▒ studio in Stockholm. The only outside musician ▒█░█
█░█▒ allowed into the sessions was Mattias Stσhl on ▒█░█
      █░█▒ vibraphone. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ On their second album they wanted a more intricate ▒█░█
█░█▒ choice of songs. The basic concept was already ▒█░█
█░█▒ there. Magnus Carlson affection for the mod culture ▒█░█
█░█▒ is a corner stone, which you can hear, and notice ▒█░█
█░█▒ in the song selection. Jazz is the key word, but ▒█░█
█░█▒ adjusted to Magnus CarlsonÆs timeless vocal style. ▒█░█
█░█▒ A few psychedelic influences can also be heard. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ Eleven songs finally made it onto "Echoes". The mix ▒█░█
█░█▒ is as exciting as itÆs diverse. It starts with ▒█░█
█░█▒ River Man (Nick Drake) and ends with Summer In Siam ▒█░█
█░█▒ by The Pogues. Between these two far ends of the ▒█░█
█░█▒ scale youÆll find Nina SimoneÆs Feeling Good, ▒█░█
█░█▒ Barabajagal (Donovan), Rain (JosΘ Feliciano), If I ▒█░█
█░█▒ Could Only Be Sure (Nolan Porter), AinÆt There ▒█░█
█░█▒ Something That Money CanÆt Buy (Young Holt ▒█░█
█░█▒ Unlimited), IÆm Alive! (Tommy James and the ▒█░█
█░█▒ Shondells), Black Swan (Thom Yorke), Love Letter ▒█░█
█░█▒ (Nick Cave and the Black Seeds) and Ocean Rain ▒█░█
█░█▒ (Echo and the Bunnymen). ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ The recording session was very intense. Most of the ▒█░█
█░█▒ songs were captured in their first or second takes. ▒█░█
█░█▒ Every track was recorded live, including the ▒█░█
█░█▒ vocals. No one wanted the sound to be too polished. ▒█░█
█░█▒ After all, they call their music garage jazz. ▒█░█
█░█▒ During particularly intense takes, emotions got the ▒█░█
█░█▒ better of some of them. Magnus vocal take on Love ▒█░█
█░█▒ Letter, actually saw a tear rolling down ▒█░█
      █░█▒ RusktrΣskÆs face. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
█░█▒ "Echoes" is a body of work where each individual ▒█░█
█░█▒ musician has a given place and where all their ▒█░█
█░█▒ contributions comes together in an obvious music ▒█░█
█░█▒ universe. Sure, itÆs jazz - but in a version that ▒█░█
█░█▒ Magnus Carlson and the Moon Ray Quintet proudly can ▒█░█
      █░█▒ call their own. ▒█░█
      █░█▒ ▒█░█
