"this masterpiece will be a classic forever" is engraved into the
run-out groove of ron trent's altered states, widely regarded as
one of the greatest house tracks of all time. written when ron was
only 15 years old and produced in his bedroom using a keyboard, a
beatbox and a tape deck, altered states is raw and essential, still
holding its appeal today. the chicago/detroit link is apparent here
especially on "making love" and of course the carl craig remix.
after releasing this record, ron started up a label with chez damier
called prescription. the first release was "the wanderer" from the
seminal new jersey born u.s. garage/house producer, romanthony. the
wanderer is likewise considered the altered states of romanthony's
career. ron trent continues to make highly respected house music,
recently incorporating more african and soul influences rather the
distinct techno edge found here.
