If like us you were only too happy to have your eardrums both caressed and assaulted
when Venetian Snares released his now infamous 'Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett',
then this is without a doubt the album for you. Carefully constructed by previously
unknown Russian producer Nizhny Novgorod, Amen Orchestra seems destined to catapult
him into breakcore royalty, with its subtle as a brick-in-the-face strings 'n beats.
Using large orchestral samples and stabs (which I would hazard a guess are the
17 waves the title suggests.) Novgorod chops, pitchbends and utterly disintegrates
them until they are barely recognizable, setting them to 185 bpm breakcore rhythms
chopped by the hands of a master. Although purported to be an unknown producer,
I suspect an alias here. I couldn't be 100% sure but these compositions seem too
well produced for a newcomer to the scene, there is a whiff of experience about them
too good to be true. Whatever the pedigree though, the most important thing is that
this rocks, while still keeping that sense of melody that made 'Rossz Csillag Allat
Szuletett' so listenable time and time again. He might not be reinventing the wheel
here but Novgorod has certainly come up with a record that touches the parts that
other breakcore rarely reaches.
