Dept. Of Rec. has a mind of its own - 'Its
about thinking outside the box", says Stape
(using a bit of co-opted corporatespeak that
serves as the name of the first track on their
'Raising Illatropolis EP'). On Arrakis
Records, that's exactly what the artists got
to do. The talentpacked, and shortlived,
Philadelphia based label became the starting
point for the likes of Kenneth Masters, Briz,
Digs Darklighter, Uncle T and DJ Low Budget.
Arrakis is perhaps most renowned for releasing
the Dept. Of Rec. "Raising Illatropolis EP" in
conjunction with the duo's own Illatropolis
imprint in 2001.
Here, emcee Adam 12 and producer Stape Mega
unleash their finest work ever. Opening track
"Thinking Outside The Box" does not only
emphase the D.O.R. philosophy, it also feature
a monster beat topped with splendid turntable
work by DJ Low Budget. "Lawndarts", a now-
classic anthem to Philly hip-hop, has Drew
Dollars on turntables and feature Adam 12's
team-up with local luminaries Breez
Evahflowin', Planet (of Outerspace) and Doap
Nixon for a impressive lyrical onslaught. The
b-side opens with super D.O.R. track
"Blessings" (with cuts by Drew Dollars) and
finishes of with "Earth Vs. Star" featuring
Adam 12 and Charlie Bawles (of Skitzofreniks)
sharing the mic. All tracks produced by Stape
Mega (and, oh Adam 12 did the artwork).
"Raising Illatropolis" is how classic it gets,
GCP gots to say this is one important
landmark for Philly hip-hop and most possibly
one of the dopest underground records ever.
Find your copy, play it and frame it!
Shouting out the group that did the original
pre of this. Longevity yall.
