▓ ███ I am not especially familiar with the work of the Hybryds, ███ ▓
▓ ███ but I am certainly aware of the reputation this Belgian ███ ▓
▓ ███ project have generated with their music for urban rituals. ███ ▓
▓ ███ With a couple of compilation tracks I was curious, but ███ ▓
▓ ███ didn't know where to start so somehow never have. Hearing ███ ▓
▓ ███ about the release of Virtual Impact I decided it was as good ███ ▓
▓ ███ an arbitrary starting point as any. Though finding out it ███ ▓
▓ ███ was a live album made me hesitant - live albums, I've found, ███ ▓
▓ ███ don't tend to be the best first step - but with the resolve ███ ▓
▓ ███ made I decided to follow through. ███ ▓
▓ ███ ███ ▓
▓ ███ Virtual Impact features 8 tracks - 7 live tracks from two ███ ▓
▓ ███ festivals and a Quick Time video of one of those tracks - ███ ▓
▓ ███ footage of the duo performing laden with heavy imagery. Four ███ ▓
▓ ███ of the tracks were performed at 1997's Liepzig festival and ███ ▓
▓ ███ see to feature the collaboration of PAL. The remaining 3 are ███ ▓
▓ ███ from 1998's Nursery Injection festival with the contribution ███ ▓
▓ ███ of Deutsch Nepal. The seven tracks seem to be of good ███ ▓
▓ ███ quality recording for live material - though suffer from ███ ▓
▓ ███ some of the strange quirks of live releases. Each track ███ ▓
▓ ███ seems to have sections from those before and after, as ███ ▓
▓ ███ though to emphasise that it is live material - but in ███ ▓
▓ ███ reality this is a disorientating and unhelpful effect. ███ ▓
▓ ███ Another trick often evident in live material is to start ███ ▓
▓ ███ every track with a vocal sample before actually getting into ███ ▓
▓ ███ the body of the piece - which strikes me as something of a ███ ▓
▓ ███ clichΘ, and one I never really liked, and is evident in all ███ ▓
▓ ███ the material here. So for me, not being most familiar with ███ ▓
▓ ███ the Hybryds work these elements let this collection down. ███ ▓
▓ ███ ███ ▓
▓ ███ Which isn't to suggest that this is a bad album in any way, ███ ▓
▓ ███ as all the material is strong - rather it confirms my fear ███ ▓
▓ ███ that this wasn't the best place for me to start. The ███ ▓
▓ ███ selection of tracks seeming to reflect the harder, crunching ███ ▓
▓ ███ rhythms of their more recent releases. Though the sound of ███ ▓
▓ ███ urban ritual is still very much present in those rhythms. ███ ▓
▓ ███ Another element that is a distinct part of the Hybryds sound ███ ▓
▓ ███ is the high pitched wailing of yasnaia's voice - strong and ███ ▓
▓ ███ mystical, integral to the power of the Hybryds. While it may ███ ▓
▓ ███ not be the best starting point Virtual Impact is a good live ███ ▓
▓ ███ album and bound to be of interest to experienced Hybryds ███ ▓
▓ ███ fans. ███ ▓
