| Kenny Burrell's smooth, tasteful guitar work and Jimmy Smith's |
| intense, fire-breathing approach to the Hammond organ have been |
| complementing each other, and delighting audiences, since the two |
| first recorded together in 1957. Put together over three days in |
| three different studios with various rhythm sections during |
| Smith's spare time while he was working on a big-band album in the |
| summer of 1963. Blue Bash! captures the Burrell-Smith chemistry at |
| its best. The alternative and breakdown takes included here offer |
| further insight into this long-running and productive musical |
| partership. |

| Guitarist Kenny Burrell has first billing on the label, but Blue |
| Bash will forever be a Jimmy Smith album. In a time when the B-3 |
| grandmaster was most likely to be punched up by Oliver Nelson's |
| big band, this 1963 date harkens back to Smith's greasy Blue Note |
| records like Back at the Chicken Shack or, perhaps, its slightly |
| inferior sister Midnight Special, minus, of course, Stanley |
| Turrentine. Still, when it could have taken the retread shortcut, |
| Blue Bash turns out to be a happy detour in the organist's Verve |
| discography--an indifferent reading of "Fever" and the |
| inconsequentially tacked-on alternates aside, it's easy-going, |
| quiet swing all around, with some surprises past the nostalgic |
| title track and "Blues for Del." Burrell, who recorded the |
| similarly-flavoured Midnight Blue for Blue Note just months |
| earlier, throws in some nice originals in "Travelin'" and the |
| deceptively tricky "Kenny's Sound," and "Easy Living" has rarely |
| been covered to such wistful, weary effect. |

| What more can be said? Smith is typically at his best when he can |
| really shake the mice out of that unwieldy instrument of his, yet |
| in the more subdued confines like "Easy Living" or Fletcher |
| Henderson's well-known "Soft Winds" here, he avoids all the sugary |
| organ ballad clichΘs, while Burrell is unfailingly in time, in |
| place and just right. It's a most welcome reissue, and helpful |
| solace from the dense brass and novelty of J.S.'s other work on |
| the label, the likes of which we'll hear plenty on the forthcoming |
| reissue of Peter and the Wolf. |

| This reissue on Verve is quite welcome. These are good, |
| straightforward Jimmy Smith/Kenny Burrell performances. They are |
| supported by Milt Hinton, George Duvivier, Bill English and Mel |
| Lewis (drums). This itself is a little unusual in that Smith (and |
| most organists) do not employ bassists, as they create their own |
| bass lines with the pedals. ItÆs also nice that thereÆs no |
| distraction of a big band setting, as Smith was regularly |
| recording at the time. Burrell has always been the ideal partner |
| for Smith and likewise. It is a longtime good marriage of great |
| musical talent. |

| The tracks are mixed with standards and original compositions, |
| burners and ballads. ôFever,ö ôBlues for Del,ö and ôEasy Living,ö |
| represent bluesy ballads that combine sensuality, depth and groove |
| in the winning combination. Burrell takes the gentlemanÆs role of |
| smooth, suave guitar treatment, while Smith energetically states |
| his case. WhatÆs interesting is the treatment of ôSoft Winds,ö |
| which is given a more uptempo vibe, while most jazz artists |
| relegate this to a slow steady funk. ôKennyÆs Soundö and |
| ôTravelin,ö round out the disk as the burners, utilizing rapid |
| licks by Smith and Burrell. They trade off in genuine respect and |
| understanding. |

| The remainder of this CD is filled with alternate takes of the |
| previous tracks that are also worth noting, even if only for |
| comparisonÆs sake. ItÆs good to see this session back on the music |
| shelves again. |
