│ This electro-laced, sugar-sprinkled pop quintet takes its name │
│ from the citrus tree that guitarist Earl Otsuka got scolded for │
│ climbing in grade school and that lead singer Kylee Swenson │
│ discovered on nighttime jaunts in college. Not surprisingly, │
│ Loquat's sweet-and-tangy sound suggests a jaded twentysomething │
│ cradled in branches, balancing between childhood nostalgia and │
│ grown-up resolve. But, like Bj÷rk or Edie Brickell, the band │
│ manages to capture kidlike charm without sounding childish. Back │
│ in 1996, Otsuka and Swenson turned their vegetative solace into │
│ a two-person trip-pop project, and since then they've added │
│ three adept analog musicians -- bassist Anthony Gordon, drummer │
│ Christopher Lautz, and keyboardist Ryan Manley -- to transform │
│ Loquat into an appetizing group affair. The band's │
│ always-catchy, often-bittersweet midtempo melodies are bolstered │
│ by sunny piano accents, cloudy synths, and Swenson's │
│ hypnotically delicate, aching vocals. │
│ │
│ Loquat issue forth a slightly longer 7-song cd of equally pretty │
│ pop that once again brings to mind that fine British pop combo │
│ The Sundays. Wide-eyed, wistful, girlish vocals from Ms Kylee │
│ Swenson with a subtle, hushed backing of gentle piano, guitar │
│ and drums that tip toe gracefully around her voice. │
│ │
│ Builder #3 is a very limited sampler of Loquat's brightest and │
│ best songs and includes a cover of The Smiths' "There is a Light │
│ That Never Goes Out." │

│ soup was founded in early 2002, with the intention of releasing │
│ the hip-hop, trip-hop, lo-fi and turntablism that has been slept │
│ on by other groups. We're a small, friendly group with a real │
│ passion for our music, who are fed up of the overly competitive, │
│ elitist and aggressive attitude of certain groups. │
│ │
│ soup extend greetings and thanks to everyone at NuHS, and anyone │
│ else who has helped us get where we are today. │
