On March 9, 2004, Blue Note Records will release Wynton
Marsalis's label debut 'The Magic Hour,' a joyous,
playful eight-song album from the Pulitzer Prize-winning
trumpeter, bandleader and composer.
Running the jazz gamut from high-speed harmonic chases to
soulful, trumpet-led romancing, 'The Magic Hour'
celebrates both music and family. Speaking of the album's
title track, Marsalis explains that "For kids, the 'magic
hour' is the one hour before they go to bed. For parents,
it's the one hour after the kids go to sleep." Throughout,
the album's range of dynamics evokes images of this
magical time, from the kinetic ebullience of kids at play,
to the reflective quiet of grown-ups preparing for sleep.
Following his previous album 'All Rise,' an extended
composition involving over 200 performers, Marsalis says,
"I wanted to reiterate my love of jazz music in a basic
quartet format." 'The Magic Hour' features three young and
talented musicians - pianist Eric Lewis, bassist Carlos
Henriquez and drummer Ali Jackson. The group, along with
guest vocalists Dianne Reeves and Bobby McFerrin, helps
Marsalis accomplish his goal with style and impeccable
musicianship.
The Los Angeles Times' Don Heckman, reviewing a recent
live performance of 'The Magic Hour' material, called the
show "imaginative, hard swinging and unassumingly
charismatic," referring to the rhythm work of Henriquez
and Jackson as "superbly transparent," and Lewis's piano
as "stunning... [ranging] from tender lyricism to
barrelhouse intensity."
The lineup is appropriate for an album dealing with family
life, as each musician has a long and deep relationship
with Marsalis. Lewis, Henriquez and Jackson have each
worked with the trumpeter since their teenage years, and
Reeves and McFerrin are long-standing friends.
Reeves sings on "Feeling of Jazz," a slow-tempo number that
Marsalis says expresses the ways "jazz lifts my soul." He and
Reeves trade licks on a scat/trumpet call-and-response.
McFerrin wrote the lyrics and performed the vocals for "Baby,
I Love You," a bouncy ditty with playful sections for each
musician to stretch improvisationally.
Elsewhere, Marsalis and co. swing into "Skipping," a
kids-at-play number with rhythmic stops and starts; "Big Fat
Hen," a strutting, whimsical tune that combines New Orleans
groove with samba; and the title track, a gear-switching
suite that features musical surprises around every corner.
Wynton Marsalis has compiled a remarkable track record as a
jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer, becoming one of the
most recognized jazz artists in the world today. He serves
as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and is renowned
as a jazz statesman - a role officially recognized in 2001
when United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan proclaimed
him an international ambassador of goodwill and appointed him
a UN Messenger of Peace. Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards
and is the first jazz musician ever to be honored with the
Pulitzer Prize in Music (for his epic 1997 recording 'Blood on
the Fields'). He has released 33 jazz and eleven classical
records and has sold more than seven million records worldwide.
