From the land of howling wolves and untamed undead comes THY VEILS,
A Neo-classical project whose roots unlike most projects in this
genre belong to Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, it is always nice to
see projects from this side of Europe finding the means to get their
music heard abroad.
Melodies is what this music is all about and Mr. Dorobantu seem to
be especially fond of melancholic, mystical and majestic ones. Some
tracks are a little bit reminiscent of old RAISON D'╩TRE from the
Prospectus I period. At times, I'm also reminded of parts from
ARCANA's Dark Age of Reason and SHINJUKU THIEF's The Scribbler, yet
this material is so diverse that it is not by any means my general
view. I guess the common denominator between the four is a very
emotional sound and that there's a playful charm in the music just
like on the SHINJUKU THIEF album.
The melodies in THY VEILS music are played on several different
instruments, yet I suspect all of the sounds have been keyboard
generated. There are almost no drones and I don't think there are
any real samples. There are pieces on bells, oboe, strings, guitar,
piano to name a few and in some pieces there are also more apparent
synthesiser bank sounds. One of the tracks makes me think to the
soundtrack to the legendary PC-game Warcraft II. In general there is
a video-game feel to this music which isn't bad of course, fans of
Fantasy tinged music will probably appreciate this album very much.
It is dreamy, mystic and sometimes spellbinding like in one of my
favourite tracks, namely No One's. This track mirage a fantasy of a
walk through a forlorn dungeon where scintillating torchlight dance
in the surrounding crystal hues.
THY VEILS music is slightly puzzling. It may be that are so many
different tracks an quite breaks and turns so a flow in the music is
sometimes vacant, making you feel lost within the music at times. I
still want to comment upon the variety as something positive however
since I find it worse when it is impossible to tell the difference
between the different tracks on an album without completely
analysing it. It took me a couple of listens to get into this but
after I did I found it a verynice piece of Neo-classicism, maybe not
revolutionary but certainly one of the better pieces from Romania I
have heard lately. Check this out if you are into unconvetional
Neo-classical music
