---
Russian immigrant pianist Art Hodes was a tireless lifelong supporter
of the traditional jazz he grew up hearing played by Jelly Roll Morton
and James P. Johnson. His sparse but fervent approach to playing
traditional jazz made Hodes effective in solo and group contexts. Up
in Volly's Room is a session with fellow traditional jazz players
Volly Defaut on clarinet and Truck Parham on bass. Though this 1972
session has almost half a century on its style, Hodes and company
infuse it with the love of master craftsmen. Hodes worked in Chicago's
south side clubs through much of his career and brings the lucidity of
the blues to his simple declarative playing. The CD reissue includes
previously unreleased material from the original session.
