In recent years, it's been the latest craze to rave about
the latest craze to come out of Liverpool. Lead by chief
Scally, James Skelly, The Coral were the first of the new
millennium Scousers to break south and reap chaos across
many a record collection. And in their wake has been many
more, not least the best of the bunch, The Bandits and
The Zutons, adding some la to our oh. But before you
think, 'God, not another bunch on the make!' allow us to
introduce The Stands. They'll amaze you. The Stands are
lead by Howie Payne, the best Dylan-alike to grip a
guitar since, well, Dylan himself. And he's not just a
rip off of Bob and The Band either! Granted, they're an
obvious influence on Howie, but it's the era and style,
not the man. Studying the make-up and complexities of
traditional folk and blues, Payne understands what it is
that makes it a good song and has grasped the ability to
transfer his knowledge into The Stands product. Of
course, being from Liverpool, the band has been in an
ideal position to put them on the right track. And
they've had some top musicians, and the limelight, at
their disposal. The first of The Stands shows was at
Liverpool's top club night, The Bandwagon. This is run by
The Bandits and regularly attracts the likes of Noel
Gallagher through the doors. In the original line-up
joining Howie on stage was younger brother Sean (drummer
with The Zutons) and Robbie of the Hokum Clones. This has
since changed to the permanent line-up of Steve Pilgrim
on drums, Luke Thomson on guitar and Dean Ravera on bass.
The band were in the early stage of existing just as The
Coral were becoming household names. But rather than rush
to get out on the back of this, it was decided to take
some time, plan the future and record the debut album
before looking for a record deal. When Echo received the
boy's signatures in April this year, the album, All Years
Leaving - due for a February 2004 unveiling - was 90%
done. So, for those turned on by the thought of timeless
folk and blues sung by the next bunch of talented
Scousers, The Stands are your men.
