▓████▓▌ This disc is another in the series of Rounder's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ amazingly extensive Alan Lomax Collection reissues. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ As part of a series dealing with collections ▓▌
▓████▓▌ compiled by Lomax from 1950s field recordings, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ these discs give us a view of World music long ▓▌
▓████▓▌ before it became a hip genre. In most of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ examples I've heard from this series, the music is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ often further afield than many recordings one can ▓▌
▓████▓▌ normally find in stores now. India, in fact, is one ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of the best and certainly broadest collections of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music from the myriad of traditions I've run ▓▌
▓████▓▌ across. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ These recordings were made between 1950 and 1958 by ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Alain Danielou, a former professor of music at the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ University of Benares (nee Varansai). As the liner ▓▌
▓████▓▌ notes explain, Mr. Danielou opted to record the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ more professional aspects of these traditions, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ labeling the music of village artists as "naive." ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The result is that these recordings, while ▓▌
▓████▓▌ certainly not as superbly recorded as much that is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ available now, features exceptionally high caliber ▓▌
▓████▓▌ performances in a shockingly broad range of styles, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ traditions, instrumentations and group sizes. I say ▓▌
▓████▓▌ shockingly so, given that most recorded music from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Indian sub-continent that has reached the West ▓▌
▓████▓▌ since the 1960's has focused on fairly narrow ▓▌
▓████▓▌ traditions, often just one per disc; have either ▓▌
▓████▓▌ been ensemble or solo recordings, rarely a mix of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ both; and have most often presented the "big" ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music, the complex traditions of string ▓▌
▓████▓▌ instruments, while virtually ignoring the wind ▓▌
▓████▓▌ instrument and percussion traditions. What this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ disc presents is a broad scope that I have never ▓▌
▓████▓▌ encountered before, and, while brief, works ▓▌
▓████▓▌ exceptionally well. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Thumri," a flute piece with minimal accompaniment ▓▌
▓████▓▌ performed by Raghunatha Prasanna, is a striking ▓▌
▓████▓▌ example of an arrangement that I have never ▓▌
▓████▓▌ encountered before. Normally, pieces from the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ classical repertoire are now recorded ensemble ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pieces: here, we hear but flute, drums, and a faint ▓▌
▓████▓▌ touch of vina (a string instrument used as a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ drone). The melody, so simply presented yet ▓▌
▓████▓▌ perfectly executed, has a greater emotional impact ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in this instance than in an ensemble setting. The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ delicate "Svaramandala," performed on a type of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ zither by Swami D. R. Parvatikar, is similarly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ stunning. Bereft of even a drum accompanist, this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ wash of pure musical ecstasy is uncommon to find in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ solo presentation: Parvatikar's virtuoso ▓▌
▓████▓▌ performance simply makes this my favourite song ▓▌
▓████▓▌ heard so far this year (even though it was recorded ▓▌
▓████▓▌ before I was born!). ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ I'm especially interested in the number of drum and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ percussion ensemble pieces presented. These, like ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the two versions of the song/drama "Kathakali" ▓▌
▓████▓▌ included, are of a style that is rarely recorded, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ consisting of the drum and percussion traditions ▓▌
▓████▓▌ with vocal accompaniment. It is a form that has a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ groove that would interest more than just drummers. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ This disc has a refreshing take on the music of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ India, a freer take ( dare say), that presents the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music in a way that connects deeper with the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ listener, instead of assuming that there is too ▓▌
▓████▓▌ much offered to digest at once. And as a lover of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ these traditions, I appreciate that. The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ cohesiveness of the songs, and the high level of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the performances, only add to the package. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The recording quality is rather interesting. Rather ▓▌
▓████▓▌ than the trounced, tinny tone associated with the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ field technology of the era, these recordings are ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rather fat, with actual bass. Although the levels ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of the instruments sometimes leave a bit to be ▓▌
▓████▓▌ desired, overall the sound is closer to that of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mid-1980s Third World recording studio quality, and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ quite noteworthy. The liner notes are thorough, if ▓▌
▓████▓▌ bordering on enthomusicological over-analysis ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (replete with song form discussions and scale ▓▌
▓████▓▌ notations). One touch I especially liked was the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ labeling of the photos of musicians in the booklet, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ including the track numbers on which they perform, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ which adds a human face to these (becoming ancient) ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recordings. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ As a collection of historic field recordings,India ▓▌
▓████▓▌ is outstanding. But simply as a compilation of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music from the area, it is fantastic. India is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ exactly the sort of disc that draws the music out ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of the research, and one that not only stands up to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ repeated listenings, it begs them. Strongly ▓▌
