reworking from Sono (Helios). We released the vinyl rip years
ago.
The road to a good cover version is beset by aural-pitfalls -
for every 'Heartbeats' by Jose Gonzales or 'The Pioneers' by
Tunng, there's Squarepusher's misjudged look at Joy Division
or the recent 'Songs For Radioheads' travesty. Those involved
know who they are... It's therefore something of a relief to
find that Sono (aka Keith Kenniff, aka Helios, aka
Goldmund...) has turned in a gorgeous interpretation of
Bjork's 'Hyperballad' for the second in Yesternow's edible 10"
series - taking the skittering electronics of the original and
recasting it as a blush of live instrumentation. Smooth as the
proverbial silk, Sono (a jazz sextet that features Kenniff's
twin brother on double bass) take the heart of 'Hyperballad'
and coax an untold emotional depth from its poignant melodies;
wherein a ten-minute arrangement exchanges the vocals for
notes and massages your cranium through its serendipitous use
of harp, loose drums and plucked guitar. Recorded live, the
production is nonetheless faultless - with only a smattering
of applause belying its performance origins, a situation
repeated on the flip with a retelling of Jim Black's jazz-rock
masterpiece 'Part Wolf'. A smoked-oak disposition that is
nourishment for the cochlea, 'Part Wolf' is buttery jazz that
recalls the work of Joni Mitchell collaborator Brian Blade -
with the Sono ensemble proving the cover version is in rude
health.
