about-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Daedelus packs more sonic detail into the twenty minutes of Meanwhileà
than some artists do in a full-lengthÆs seventy minutes. ItÆs an
incredible rideùexhausting, eclectic, relentless, collagisticùthat
bodes well for his forthcoming A Gent Agent. The six tracks are bold
and at times ridiculously dense; theyÆre also sample-heavy, with
Daedelus building complex arrangements from a broad palette of
orchestral and voice samples (including what sounds like Barry White on
the soul-drumÆnÆbass hybrid æJust For YouÆ) which are then paired with
fulminating beats. The auspicious opener æOne Breath to BreathÆ is a
good example, as the merging of cinematic strings, harps, and voice
samples with a churning electro beat intensifies to near-cacophonous
proportions. The tracksÆ stylistic contrasts keep things interesting
throughout, too. Not surprisingly, æThe BrazilianaireÆ evokes the
celebratory spirit of a street party with is shouts, flutes, and
percussion but then, unexpectedly, dancehall toasting and a manic
drumÆnÆbass rhythm are added, and all in the span of only two minutes.
æA Stiff DrinkÆ combines crisp hip-hop beats with curling guitar lines
in whatÆs primarily a drums showcase, while æOutnumberedÆ pushes its
abstract electronics to almost abrasive extremes, at one point
simulating the sound of a hundred ear-splitting ringtones frequencies.
The longest track, æDenouement,Æ ends the EP distinctively by largely
eschewing samples and highlighting instead gorgeous melancholy lines
voiced by acoustic guitar, flute, and saxophone. ItÆs a welcome,
gentler coda coming after the preceding storm. To describe Meanwhileà
as challenging is both an understatement and a compliment. From
beginning to end, the fecundity of DaedelusÆs imagination startles, as
an endless pool of ideas floods forth at breakneck pace."
