▄█▓▓███▌ The festival ran from February 17 until 22. It was ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ organised by Swiss Music Export, with the dual aim of ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ promoting Swiss music, and opening up new markets for ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ contemporary musicians and producers. ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ The events centred on Cargo, the alternative live ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ music venue and restaurant in Shoreditch, in the ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ heart of London's East End. The Canteloupe Restaurant ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ hosted a series of photo and art exhibitions, and the ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ arts space Public Life was the base for experimental ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ sound installations. ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ Performers included Mich Gerber, a classically ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ trained double-bass player, who has gained a ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ following for experimentation with contemporary ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ rhythms and harmonies, and his dynamic stage ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ behaviour. He appeared alongside British vocalist ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ Imogen Heap. ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ A performer with a very different style was Polar, a ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ folk and pop singer from Geneva. He is known for the ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ way he juggles with words, even in English, in his ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ songs. ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ Breakbeat, tec house, electro and synthetic disco - ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ all of these, and much more, were on offer from the ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ numerous Swiss visitors and their British partners. ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ And alongside the art events, the project looked at ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ the social trends underlying the explosion of new ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ talent in London and Zurich, which goes back to the ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ early 1990s when industrial enterprises pulled out of ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ the cities. ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ Artistic communities were soon drawn to the run-down ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ factory and warehouse areas in both East London and ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ West Zurich. Residential communities, experimental ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ theatres and underground clubs sprang up, taking ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ advantage of a combination of spacious premises and ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ low rents. ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ Subsequently, other groups have adopted the ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ alternative philosophy of living and working within ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ the community, creating a new urban ideal for the new ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ century. Formerly derelict buildings have been ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ transformed into trendy bars and restaurants, ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ theatres, cinemas and art galleries. Innovative ▐███▓▓█▄
▄█▓▓███▌ businesses have taken over deserted office space. ▐███▓▓█▄

▄█▓▓███▌ discussion in Hoxton on February 19, bringing ▐███▓▓█▄

▄█▓▓███▌ journalists to exchange ideas about how art can ▐███▓▓█▄
